Default How do you tell a 4 year old you're putting down the family cat?

It's our 11 year old son's cat, he's going to be bad enough (he's aware it's probably coming, we haven't hidden anything from him to date), but wtf do we tell the 4 year old? 7 year old cat we've had since a kitten, cancer, putting her down Monday. We're telling our son tomorrow afternoon.

Anyone have any ideas based on experience?

    This sucks...

Just don't do what my parents did to me with our dog when I was young. They told me the dog ran away...found out years later that they put it down and I was madder than hell at them.

Tell the 4 year old that the cat is very sick and in pain, that you don't want to have the cat suffer any more. That's its time for the cat to go to Kitty Heaven (Rainbow bridge). Do a google search for rainbow bridge and read it to the 4 year old.

Sorry to hear about your cat, that sucks.

OLO - thank you. I didn't know about that site. Am checking it out now, it's very helpful.

VHR - yeah, that would piss me off too. Pretty sure we weren't going there.

When I was four and my beloved dog Sable died, my mom (bawling her eyes out, mind you) said to me "Honey, I'm going to the store, I'll be back soon."

Later that day, she told my sister and I Sable had to be put down. My parents were never ones to hide the harsh reality from us, no matter how young we were and how bad it was. I'm very glad she did that.

Honestly, I've got no experience. The dogs I grew up with were put down when I was 16 and 17, so I've got nothing.

Another question - do we want our son (the 11 year old) to be in the room when she's put down? I guess I'll leave it up to him, but wondering if we should encourage/discourage. I know I wasn't at the vets when either of the dogs were - my choice. I've thought about it since, especially one of them, but not sure I regret it. I don't know if seeing her take her last breath would have haunted me.

Ahh, shit. I really don't want to be dealing with this right now. Or ever.

Any grandmas or grandpas that are already in heaven? The kitty can go to stay with them because he is so sick. My 5 year old would have gone with that when he was 4.
A little more volume in the headphones please.

My opinion, your son should not be part of the actual putting her down, he is too young for that. As brave as he may act or think he is, I would not allow him to be part of this.

That really depends on the maturity of your son. My 14 year old nephew just went with us to put our dog down and I think it was a good experience for him. However it really depends on the kid.

I'm 17, and I don't think I could handle a put down NOW, but it depends on how close you are to the dogs. We treat our's like children around here, and they're very important parts of our lives. I simply could not stand to see it happen in front of my eyes (though I know, someday, I'll have to deal with it). I wouldn't expose an 11 year old to that man, it would really be devastating.

My wife doesn't want to be in the room, and said she doesn't think our son should, either. So maybe we don't give him the choice.

Of course, that leaves me - do I go in the room and try to keep her from being scared, or worry about my reaction and just avoid it? Kind of a rhetorical question. I'm not a cat guy, although this cat's been pretty cool, as far as cats go.

I'm thinking we'll take the easy way out and say goodbye to her and go.

Wife just told my son (I'm at work getting this by phone), might move it up to Saturday.

I was with my dog Abby when she passed, well, they gave her a shot to but her a sleep then took her in the back to give her to final shot. I got to be with her until she fell a sleep. I am glad I was with her for that, she was suffering.

Be with the cat for that part so its not so freaked out. Pets already dont like Vets. You may even want to look into a Vet or service that comes to you and puts the cat to sleep. Some Vets offer this or can recommend someone that does.

OLO, I've seen some of your posts on animals before (uh, NOT counting the Racoon thread, talking about pets), I kind of had a feeling when I put this up that you were going to step up with some excellent advice.

    Thanks.

We'll see what happens. I know what I SHOULD do, not sure what I'm going to do. Frankly, I like the cat, but I don't have a tremendous attachment to her. We'll see how it plays out. Knowing me, I'll do what I should do, regardless of what I want to do, LOL.

Well I had to put my dog of 16yrs down when I was 32.
I knew in my mind at the time there was no chance in hell that I was going to just abandon him to two strangers.I was there for him just like he was always there for me.

I had to put my 14 yr old dog down a few years ago (cancer) and it was like a kick in the gut. I miss that little guy so much...I don't think I could have an other dog, only because I don't want to go through that again.
Anyway, I was there when the end came, I had to be, there was no other way.
