Default The "Quantum of Solace" discussion thread

There were quite a few things about this movie that I thought merited a little more chat but that would be "unfair" for those who haven't seen it yet. Or maybe it's just me and it is, after all, only a film.

SO, SPOLIERS AHEAD. I REPEAT, SPOILERS. IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM AND DON'T WANT IT RUINED FOR YOU, STOP HERE. YOU WILL BE LIABLE TO SEARCH AND THE USE OF DEADLY FORCE HAS BEEN AUTHORISED.

    SPOLIERS AHEAD.

    Are they gone?

    Good.

The big criticism of this movie is that it's all action and too short. I don't agree completely but here are a few points that I felt a longer film could have encompassed.

First, the organisation itself. One of the most exciting bits for me in the trailer was when the guy being interrogated said "we have people everywhere". I loved the whole paraniod tone of it. One ofthe most exciting scenes in the movie I thought was the opera segment. All these powerful people meeting and having a private conference by radio I thought was amazing. But after that, we hear very little about it. It seems that the main villian, whilst powerful, is certainly nowehere near the top of the ladder. I didn't want any absolute resolution, but I would have loved to get a bit more of the "reach" of this group. But maybe it was a good idea to keep it in the background. Maybe "they" will feature in the next installment.

The British agent that Bond shags. Her death was shocking and a decent homage to the earlier Bond, was it Goldfinger, but just afew more minutes with her would have made the death have more impact. Also Felix's death kind of came at you from nowhere.

Also, the character of Vesper's boyfriend. The scene where Bond lets the girl go but keeps him was pretty tense but it felt a little rushed.

I still think this was one of the best ever. It had all the adrenaline but with that extra hard edge that Craig brings. The last few scenes really showed how he went from borderline psychotic to the cold, professional that we are used to.

It had a lot of the good elements: The locations were superb especially and the Bond girl on a revenge trip of her own was a nice touch. I also liked the way that his relationshiop with M became very fraught but gradually changed over the film.

As for the bourne wannabee comments - This is very different film making and I thought the editing suited the more action packed sequences. You still had the grand scenes like the opera for the majestic angle.

Daniel Craig is already my favourite Bond and these first two films are amongst my favourites. Let's hope he does more than the contracted four. I'malready excited about the next one.

I know. And we talked about a discussion thread (with spoilers) to protect the innocent.

I think you are referring to Mathis' death. But I also agree. It did just kinda happen.

As usual, I'm left a little bit confused by some of the events

I thought Mathis was a traitor - how was it determined he was not?

Some of the fight sequences were done in a way that I frequently lost track of who was who. More of a difference in clothing style and colour would help!

Anyone catch that Fields' first name was "Strawberry" (according to the credits)?

I didn't like the overly techy look of the phone screens. I almost expected the Emperor or Yoda to come beaming in at some point.

Is Whyte going to be a modern incarnation of Blofeld?

And I agree, some scenes seemed as if they could've been a little longer and offered a little more information.

But still, a nice addition to the Bond franchise.

I agree....I didn't get that. There wasn't really a reason for it. Did he have to die? And I didn't get why he dumped him in the garbage. He said "he wouldn't care" or something.....but I guess we needed to know a little more about Mathis to really understand why he said that.

I liked the movie a lot....but there could've been more character development in places.

I think this is what happened...

Mathis was saying he had the police chief in his back pocket, so Bond didn't have to worry about any trouble from the local authorites. As it turned out in the end, we discovered that the police chief was a part of the impending coup all along. So Mathis was stuffed in the trunk as a message to Bond, in part, to set him up to be apprehended by the police, and also to let Bond know that the organization knew about Mathis' and Bond's relationship.

I think he was just thrown in the trash that way to show that Bond was becoming more "cold" and "distant". Not letting his personal emotions get in the way of the job at hand.

    maybe...

at the time, I figured Bond planted him there as backup should complications arise - after all, I believe Mathis did emerge from the trunk armed.

ya, but mathis was all bloody and beaten up, he was put there by the bad guys. the cops told him to remove the body, and as bond was picking him up and turning, the cops shouted "hes moving!" or something and drew their weapons, then bond used mathis as a human shield as the cops fired on him. it wouldnt make sense for 007 to beat his friend into unconsciousness and then plant him in the back of a getaway vehicle, not to mention the fact bond didnt meet up with mathis the entire time while at the party (mathis was with the police chief or whatever)

This is really minor, and has nothing to do with the story, but my wife and I were left with this one burning question as we left the movie theater:

What exactly are we looking at when the camera shows the ol' upskirt of that girl in the very end. At that exact same moment, we both turned to each other with that look of "did we just see what we thought we saw?"

Anyway, for those that have seen it more than once, beaver or no beaver? My wife and I were split (no pun intended )
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

I could've sworn I read somewhere where someone was questioning the Mathis timeline - in "Casino Royale", we see him get led away, while in "Quantum of Solace", which take place within the immediate days/weeks after the conclusion of "Casino Royale", it is made to sound as if he'd been retired for awhile. Wish I could find where I read that so I could make sure I had the commenter's concern correct. The things we don't know, however, are (I don't believe any time is specified for the length of each):

A: how long was Bond in convalesence?

B: how long after Vesper's death was it before Bond went after White (I wouldn't think it was too long, but I guess it depends upon how easy he was to find)
