    Default Tubes

Hey, I would like some info about tubes.

What are the differences between 12AX7's and 12AT7's? Are the fittings the same?

I'm going to buy another mic preamp pretty soon: an ART Gold MPA. I will replace the stock tubes - they are 12AX7's - and from something I read at another forum, it sounds like I could use 12AT7's. Is that true?

Yes, 12AX7s and 12AT7s are interchangeable.

Here's a breakdown of the differences and some other interchangeable tubes:

I put a 12at7 as the last tube in the chain in my 5150 blockletter's preamp and it made a killer difference. It got rid of alot of the fizzy topend and it also reduced quite a bit of the typical US high gain hiss. Much more playable, and still just as responsive. The only thing I notice is they take a bit more warm up time than a 12ax7, but that's neither here or there. It sounds great, plus avoiding a mod is the cats ass.
She looks so $#@!'n good ,so sexy and so frail....Somethin's got the bite on me, I'm goin' straight to Hell.
