Default Former Hendrix Drummer Mitch Mitchell Dies At 61

Jimi Hendrix Experience Drummer Mitch Mitchell Found Dead

    Written by Mike Greenhaus
    Wednesday, 12 November 2008

Drummer Mitch Mitchell was found dead in a Portland, OR hotel room today. He was 61. The famed drummer is best known as one-third of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. According to all reports, Mitchell died of natural causes.

One of the most influential drummers of the psychedelic-era, the British-born musician co-founded The Jimi Hendrix Experience in 1966 at the age of 20. Despites his young age, Mitchell was already a successful studio musician before anchoring the Experience and had clocked in time with Georgie Fame and The Blue Flames. Hendrix found Mitchell with the help of his manager Chas Chandler, who hosted a series of public auditions for in England for Hendrix’s backing band. Mitchell is responsible for many of the jazz and fusion elements often associated with the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s sound. Along with Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience popularized the power trio format on seminal releases like Are You Experienced?, Axis: Bold as Love and Electric Ladyland. After the Experience dissolved in 1969, Mitchell continued to work with Hendrix, first in his expanded Woodstock band and later as the Cry of Love band with Billy Cox. He also performed with John Lennon, Eric Clapton and Keith Richards as The Dirty Mac as part of The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus in 1968.

Following Hendrix’s untimely death, Mitchell completed work on a number of the guitarist’s unfinished albums. He also worked with likeminded musicians such as Jack Bruce and Jeff Beck throughout the 1970s and 1980s. For most of the past decade, Mitchell lived in Europe and only played sporadically, often at tribute to his former bandleader.

Oddly enough, Mitchell spent the few weeks before his death on the road as part of the 2008 Experience Hendrix tour with Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Eric Johnson, among others. He was found dead five days after the tour’s final stop. Mitchell was the last surviving member of the original Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Ditto. Was discussing with someone today that even though The Experience
was before my time, my prime motivator is the trio thing as evinced by the
aforesaid, Zep, Who, VH, Blizzard, et al. You can't fool fate, so don't be late.

    RIP.

Mr. Mitchell, I'm so glad you gave us all those great drum tracks. You were one heck of a player. Thanks for the music, sir. Rest in peace.

I just saw him two weeks ago...

He didn't look good, he had completely lost "it" (his abilities) but he still had the heart.
