Default What prompts a song to be written?

Usually, it is some chick, for me.

Whether it is a chick I just met, a chick I am obsessed with, or some chick I know, every song I have written in the last year involves some chick.

Usually it's a melody, a riff or an entire song that I'll hear in my head, either towards the end of a dream/just waking up, which I promptly either write down or record. Then I spend roughly an hour trying to figure out where I'd heard it before. If I can't come up with a reference point by then, I claim it as my own and develop it. More often than not the music will suggest a subject matter.

As for where this comes from, the inspiration...well that's probably decided by whatever the hell I ate or drank the night before. Really mystical, eh?

Well, I did buy an Electroharmonix Frequency Analizer and used it with the ol' Kaossilator. Basically an old Ring Modulator...

But I was thinking of some bird's atomic green eyes whilst thinking of the bassline/drum riff... This bird is my new poisoned apple...

That's one way of doing it. Another is a method I call decomposition: play somebody else's tune backward, and look for clues. For instance the opening chords of 38 Special's "Hold On Loosely" played backward make a killer bridge.

If it's not for $ then it's for sex, so I suppose a chick could be the reason too.

For me, I'll have an emotion about a situation that I want to express. I try to boil down my emotion to it's most basic component to figure out what it is I really want to say. That ends up being the chorus of the song.

    For example:

Guy just gets out of a bad relationship/marriage. He is distant and unprepared to commit to a relationship. He dates a girl with no intention of committing. He doesn't realize he's fallen for her until she leaves. She leaves because she sees that he's damaged, and it hurts her too much to be with a guy that won't trust her with his feelings.

    So:

What does he want to say to her? What was he really feeling?

The phrase, "I didn't want to fall in love" comes to mind.

So now you have the chorus, the singular idea that you want the song to focus on. Now the task is to figure out how you want that to be sung. After you come up with the key, the melody, and the cadence of the chorus, you can start to focus on the rest of the song. Coming up with the verses is alot easier once you have the chorus to build the song around. Once you have the melody of the chorus, and the key, it's easier to figure out what you are going to play behind the verses.

I typically configure a song as follows:

    -Short intro (not always necessary)
    -First verse
    -Chorus
    -Second verse
    -Chorus
    -Bridge
    -Guitar Solo
    -Chorus
    -Outro

Sometimes I play with the order. I may put the second verse immediately after the first verse, and add a third verse after the first chorus. I don't think it really matters what order you put these components in, but I do think you should have all these components in some order to make a decent song.

Inspiration can come from many different sources, you just have to learn how to recognize potential sources of inspiration. It could be a newspaper article, a movie, a book, or personal experience. Most really great songs are written from personal experience, but can be pulled from the other sources if you have an overdeveloped sense of empathy.

Oh yeah, get a thesaurus, and a rhyming dictionary.
"Having an opinion that people disagree with doesn't make you a Douche, arguing with the people who disagree with your opinion and calling them stupid does!" -Me.

for years the only thing I wrote about was the women/girls I was involved with...then the second period of my writing involved introspection independent of my relationships with other people...now I'm really trying to do something different. I'd like to try and write story songs, like Bon Jovi during the Keep the Faith/These Days period and Springsteen...I want to write something that doesn't have anything to do with me specifically but I'm having quite the hard time with it...perhaps that's why this has been such a dry spell for me....but I feel it's something I need to do...i feel i need to step out of my comfort zone and write something, if for nother reason than as an experiement.

Wheter it's a dancer I am a regular customer of, a girl I banged whilst meeting during a gig, a bird I am married to, or even a bird I am friends with, it seems that I end up always writing songs about birds/chicks.

Anything can inspire me. Recent inspirations have been:
    - my wife
    - my new guitar (a Gibson Les Paul Studio...alpine white w/gold hardware)
    - the acquisition of my new Boss GT-10
    - a diesel generator making a strange, rhythmic noise accompanied by a hum that modulated in time from Bb to Ab

I'm a big practitioner of decomposition, too.

    Great!!!!

I swear that a new instrument will help ease any writer's block. A wife you love also helps!

Did you sample the generator? If not, you should!!!

Still being alive and able to play the guitar. I've never really had a problem with coming up with a song. I can look at a fresh turd on the ground and write something about it.

I have had writers block for about three years so this thread is great for me. Hell I am going through a divorce and still nothing is flowing. You would think shit would be flowing out but I am constipated like an 85 year old man.

    Keep the suggestions coming.
