Default Best dog for people with allergies?

    Any thoughts?

My girlfriend and my kids want a dog (so do I!) My gf and daughter have some allergies and we're trying to avoid adding more issues.

I love medium to large sized dogs (like labs), but not full sized poodles or anything like that (I just don't like them...). Anyone have a good suggestion for dogs who:

    1) shed very little
    2) have little or no dander
    3) aren't the size of a football...(other when they're pups, cuz that's cute!)
    4) good temperament

    etc.

I don't want one that wants to run across the world every day, but I don't want a fat lazy dog either. I still think labs are one of the best options, but I'm open to other suggestions (also assuming we can find one).

We're thinking about going to a pet rescue, and it sounds like they have hundreds and hundreds of dogs from a recent rescue, so I'm hoping to have some good ideas before we go.

How about a soft coated Wheaten Terrier - my neighbor has one and he's a great dog!

aren't they smaller dogs? Maybe I'm wrong... Good with kids? Do they shed? I'm clueless... I only know labs and various mutts...

I don't want a dog that if I trip over it, I kill it. I want one that will be resilient under my feet... That and if I wanted a small dog, I'd get a cat.

Honestly a standard poodle is your best bet or even better a golden - doodle (gld retriever/ poodle mix).

Smart, non shed, good size, not too crazy but love to play with kids, chase a ball ect.... wonderful temperment.

Wheaton terriers are not small at all. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/softcoat...tenterrier.htm

A friend of mine has a goldendoodle - very cute but like most golden retrievers very high energy. Don't know their breed info, could be just this one is.

I've heard of the golden/labradoodles. They sound very appealing, but not sure if I'll find one at a rescue. I saw some pretty hefty prices when I looked at breeders. The wheaten looks good, too!

I'll have to ask around. Thanks!!! Keep 'em comin!

We had a very similar list--hypoallergenic, non shedder, great with kids, etc--and we decided on a Havanese.

4 years later we're extremely happy with our decision. Pogo is a great dog and a welcome part of the family. The standard is to keep the long hair, but we trim his shorter in a "puppy cut" and he's an adorable fuzzball. Wouldn't trade him for anything.

bichon frise, poodles, chihuahua, bedlington or dandie dinmont terriers,
    coton de tulear...

best is to just find a really good breeder, go to them and spend some time around them so that you know for sure

shelter animals can be hypo too...you just have to be choosey...and they'll LOVE you like no other dog you ever had...got a border collie that way.

my sister grew up with terrible allergies and we had Boxers... greatest family dog there is and she seemed to tolerate them well.

I now have Labs because my sister is a breeder.. they shed BAD, but she out grew a lot of her allergies.
If it were not for the fact my 2 dogs were free, I would still have boxers.

Something to keep in mind. A dog that does not shed will need to be groomed once a month or more.

I have a Lhasa Apso, she does not shed but needs a hair cut about every 3 weeks.

    Default Good info

My wife has some kind of fancy animal degree. No, really.

    Get a:

    Poodle

    Schnowzer's (sp)

They have hair as opposed to fur. This is what I'm told.

    Hell if I know

Dr. 5150 had it right - the trick is hair vs. fur, due to the dander or something like that.

I did some research trying to get my wife to buy in at one point - there aren't any truly hypoallergenic dogs, but ones with hair tend to be easier on the allergies than fur.

Poodles are the ones you keep seeing referred to, and while I've never been a fan, have to admit they are phenomenal pets - very friendly, extremely smart, etc.

I was eyeballing the Labradoodles, but then came to my senses - don't want to deal with the walks, picking up the poo, the barking in the middle of the night, the odor that ALWAYS tells you a dog lives in the house, etc.
