Default MTV Finally Figures Out What To Do With All Of Those Videos They No Longer Play...

Ever on the cutting edge, the culturally irrelevant MTV has started up a website to play...videos. Who would have seen that coming?

    Here's the link:
    http://www.mtvmusic.com/

Perhaps looking to actually make use of all those music videos that are just sitting in their vault, MTV has launched a new Website, dubbed MTV Music. Thankfully, MTV didn’t stop short after uploading the TRL fare, as iconic and vintage videos — some even predating MTV itself — are ready for streaming. It’s kind of like a higher quality YouTube, but without those annoying pop-up bubbles. The collection is pretty comprehensive: Of the 20-something fairly obscure videos we searched for, only two were absent (no love for Us3’s “Cantaloop [Flip Fantasia]”).

Plus, artists who have banned their videos from YouTube (like Michael Jackson and Prince) are both included and embeddable on MTV Music. And judging by the minute-and-40-seconds long amazingly-incredible intro to Prince’s “Cream,” the videos are all in their full-form glory. With the finale of MTV’s last “real” music show TRL airing in November, it’s nice to see MTV find a good retirement home for all those videos.

Seems too little too late with youtube and all. I looked for some videos (besides VH, Dave and Sammy) that I thought were a little more obscure and could not find any by extreme, shotgun messiah, slaughter and roxy blue. bands that were on MTV back in the day. I will stick with youtube.

It'd be nice if they'd actually play those on TV but oh well. Far be it from me to stop the Real World.

And I can't watch youtube at work anymore.

The artist list is simply bizarre. I mean, it does not include Talk Talk's "It's My Life" (one of the finest videos ever made), yet has tons of country artists listed. Does anyone here remember MTV playing a single Brooks And Dunn tune? Nothing against the guys (who I happen to truly enjoy), yet there are thirty-five of them listed!

Maybe because Mtv's owner (Viacom) also owns Country Music Television (CMT)?

That would make sense. I simply found the way things are set up to be just plain odd. No David Johansen, an artist that was once a staple with a live medley of Animals tunes. Hell, they even omit Billy Squier, not that it's necessarily a loss.

Yet there are 47 Dwight Yoakum videos available.

Talk Talk "It's My Life", love that song and video. The version that No Doubt did a few years ago was ok, but doesn't come close to the original. There were quite a few groups that put out some really good synth driven music from the era. Hope I don't get thrown off the links for saying that.

Not to diminish Chef's contribution, but I gotta stand with ya on that. Was excited for about two minutes before I looked up "Saga" and got zip.

I hear ya. Initially, I felt this thing would be wonderful. Yet upon closer inspection, with the exception of a few minor things, it's a definite thumbs down.
