Memorable Gigs - Good or Otherwise

Hey, all. We got a "shows from hell" thread, but I'm sure we have more stories that would fit in this thread.

Let's have 'em. We all like to share our experiences, so let's start posting!

"The shit I read on this site." -- Dave's Dreidel (Nov 6th, 2013)

"Don't ever confuse talent with fame." -- Bob Lefsetz

"There's very little greatness in this world, but in the crucible of quality there's a special corner reserved for Van Halen." -- Bob Lefsetz

Okay, c. 1985-86. Our band, in one of it's dozens of incarnations, was hired along with another band to play hour and a half long sets. Them on for 30 minutes, 10 minute break, us for 50 or so, with a half hour break in between.

Problem was, with the drum riser in the place, there was simply no room for two kits, even if I broke mine down to a single bass setup (which I had done before in such instances). Begrudgingly, I accepted that the other drummer would use my kit, simply because I didn't want to back out of the deal.

We finished the next to the last set of the night and we sat down in the corner and talked about what we might do to spice things up a bit for the last set. Next thing I know, the other band takes the stage and the other drummer, who had been downing drinks like water all night, hurls all over my kit. The other band, needless to say, did not finish, and two of my bandmates had to drag me outside to keep me from killing the other drummer. When I finally got back inside, my kit was as shiny as it was during setup. Apparently the other members of their band felt so bad they cleaned it from bass to cymbals. We took the stage, kicked ass and collected our cash.

The irony of the story is that their drummer had drank so much, that he essentially drank up all of their money for the evening. Next time I saw the guitarist from the band, they were looking for a new drummer.

Oh, and no one ever used my kit again.

haha well my band played alot of gigs this past year. We were fortunate enough to get to play some big festivals in our area.

At one fair we played at, we were playing an hour and a half set. We played two days. The second day was Easter Sunday. We proceeded to play our song "Sex" in which the chorus is "Your sex is like your weapon, your sex is like your drug, sometimes you just dont follow through and a little is not enough." Well as soon as i go "Your sex" about 5 families get up and walk out with little children haha.

We played what is called the Blue Crab Festival here where we live. There was a drunk guy in the front row that went up to my girlfriend when i was backstage after the show and was like "The only people that will make it in that bannndd iss the drummmmer and the guitarist" it was funny

We played six flags over georgia in july, and we were treated like shit by the other band. So we all hocked one in their water tank. We also released a few F Bombs onstage when it was a family event. haha

My guitar player one time had to do a solo kinda liek sammy did with VH. Well he disappears for like 20 minutes during a break, and comes back all frantic because two of his strings broke on his guitar... like it was funny because we think he cut them. They snapped in the same exact spot on the two middle strings. if you are familiar with strings breaking... two rarely break at the same time in the SAME spot.

One time i was playing one with a dude, and he was changing shit up and making it sound like shit so i walked off the stage 7 songs in haha.

thats just a few i love performing haha.

Ha ha ha! Yeah. My Grandma K did. Drank a little bit of BG. Said it keeps you regular. She died in '05 at the age of 93.

It's ALWAYS cool when anyone compliments you after a gig. People don't have
to do that and I find it very gracious when they do. Especially when they are
young kids. I find it encouraging that they appreciate good playing. I've been
cornered on more than one occasion by groups of Scandinavian kids who
want to know all about where I'm coming from. Quite flattering. And that's
not to toot my own axe. I am amazed anyone would call me out considering
the caliber of talent I'm fortunate enough to work with. There are at least 4
other players in the stable who school me nightly. But I think what I win
on is style points. Makes it all worth while.
