    Default Life On Mars

Anybody watching this? Kinda quirky - got Harvey Keitel and Michael Imperioli - and great music. Not sure if I like it the way it is, or if I would like it better if it was just a straightforward look at 1973 police work filmed today. Of course, people could say I could just watch "Adam 12" or "Mannix" reruns, but those aren't in HiDef! Plus, it's kind of nice to see Tyler react to the way they did things in 1973 with his 2008 knowledge. The only problem with any gimmick type show is you have to wonder how long can they make the gimmick last. If the show is still on in 4 years - will they have him going after "Son of Sam" in 1977, with his 2008 knowledge that it was Berkowitz?

I forgot to watch but I had seen the commercials coming up to the premier. It looks pretty interesting to me though. I'll check it out this next week.

This and Fringe were the only two shows that looked even remotely interesting this season. Apparently, this is the American version of a show with the same title and premise from the BBC.

It's a shame that Imperioli's character is so underwritten, yet this could change as there has already been some hints that he'll be up to no good in the future. (By the way, has anyone else noticed how astonishingly similar the character looks to a mid-seventies Glenn Frey? )

I don't believe the producers have the show's mythology quite worked out, as Sam has now heard his girlfriend's voice over an AM radio, has witnessed a doctor diagnosing him through a (black and white) television, has seen present day New York reflected in a door window in the squad room and has had a vision brought on by an alien spacecraft.

For those paying attention, there are a few details from seventies' era cop shows, like the "on again, off again" hubcap on a car after a spirited chase, and the overall dirty, sepia tone to the outdoor scenes. The show truly looks and feels at times like it belongs sandwiched between Barney Miller and Toma (the precursor to Baretta).

And yes, the music is terrific. "Little Willie" by The Sweet was an inspired choice for a fight/chase scene.

I do now! Knew there was something familiar about his look.

It's one of those shows that'll take a few episodes to hit its stride as there's been setup involved. I think once we get down to who's who out of the regulars and the recurring characters, we'll start to see more focus on the main characters, including Imperioli. I do worry with that kind of star power (Keitel, Mol, Imperioli) that someone is only temporary.

It is my new favorite show.

Harvey Keitel is fun and an interesting choice for the lead supporting character.

I like that they don't get caught up too much in the jee-whiz aspects of the show and in the end it's still a solid crime/mystery show.

Here's the BBC's website for the original series:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/lifeonmars/

It only ran two seasons here, but not because of a lack of success - it was a huge hit - but because the story had run its course. A follow-up show called Ashes to Ashes focusing on the secondary characters came along, though.

Here, Life on Mars was a nod to old British cop shows, particularly The Sweeney (as in Sweeney Todd - slang for Scotland Yard's Flying Squad). I'm not sure what they're referencing in a US version.
HERE AND GONE by Haylen Beck (Stuart Neville writing as...) - "It doesn't get better than this." - Lee Child, "Highly recommended." - Harlan Coben, "Cancel all your plans and settle in for the ride." - Ruth Ware, "This is a book that lives up to the buzz." - Alafair Burke

I saw trailers for this one and honestly thought it looked like the most exciting thing on TV for years. Too much travelling meant I didn't get to watch it but I heard that it is all on DVD now. I may be buying a set.

The Sweeney was, and still is, the best cop show ever made. Nothing comes close.

should've put the thread title in quotes!

be cool if someone who's seen the British version can see the American version as well and offer a comparison.

Also have to wonder in this day and age of television on DVD if the producers included in their licensing of the music the DVD rights as well?

I was really looking forward to this show...more that anything else this season. I'm not sure now. I really don't know how they're going to carry the story forward. The secondary characters already seem to be stereotypes...the pretty wanna be cop who no one will take seriously, the hard as nails captain, etc.

i think they are really going to have problems with the blending of genre's that is taking place here..cop show, time travel, and space(?) ...I thought the introduction of the "little machines" was jarring and took me away from the show just when I was starting to buy into it. At least Quantum Leap had a sense of humor to take the edge off the unbelievabilty of it's premise...this is a straight up cop show tone tho.

I'll give it a chance, but this may be another one of those really good shows that just can't get its legs under it.

But if they're still looking for old British Shows to remake for US TV my vote goes to Red Dwarf

The thing I like is that while we know that he is in a coma we aren't sure what else is going on. That mystery doesn't get in the way of the show and I think that will help the show along better that "Journey Man"'s mythology that often got in the way of the over all story.
