Default AIG **You've Got To Be Kidding Me!

O.K. so now most have heard about this bailout thing that the goverment has done for banks, AIG and alike and then the recent "retreat" AIG execs recently had for over $400,000.

Today it was told to me by someone who is involved in tourism in Monterey, Ca. that they have another retreat booked soon at the Hilton in Monterey.

    When will this shit stop!?

I may stop paying my taxes. Really. Not because they are doing a retreat. They are entitled to that under whatever company policy, guideline, contract whatever they are governing themselves under. I don't care. But for my tax dollars to lend support to it going forward? Sorry. Please put me in front of the supreme court and have them tell me where it says they have the right of taxation to support such activity, let alone the bailout itself.

Why stop there? Stop making your house payment and the government will offer some kind aid. Stop paying your utilities and the government will offer assistance. I mean, really, why pay anything?? Let someone else foot the bill.

Certainly you're not suggesting that I'm looking for some kind of handout or freebie with my disagreement of corporate distribution of my wealth.

No, no, no, I was being sarcastic. I'm with you in thinking why should those of us who work hard, pay our taxes, our house payments, utilities, credit cards, etc continue to do so when the government is willing to bail everyone out. The guys in the middle always get stuck paying the bill.

The only thing to do is vote them out of office. Anyone who voted in favor of the bailouts isn't getting my vote--and that includes both Obama and McCain.

Doesn't the Constitution prohibit the use of public funds for private debt?

I don't know, I'm asking. It doesn't appear that there are true standards or rules or responsibilities in Washington anymore, if there ever really were. Is the system so corrupt that they'll do or propose or freaking take over just about anything, as long as there is power and money involved? Has the country taken a major step toward socialism in the past month?

Should we simply put our heads between our legs and kiss our national proverbial asses goodbye? Swim out past the breakers, watch the world die?

Shit, this can't be healthy. Thanks, Eddymon.

Socialism? No. Corporatism? Yes. Socialism is the idea that certain services can best be rendered by the government, for the benefit of the people.

These bailouts have been done for the benefit of whomever is receiving the money. Some jackass will surely come along and attempt to say that we all benefit from the attempt to keep the economy liquid, but that's bullshit. Those that have kept their house in order are being fleeced by those that have not.

Any sense of responsibility and accountability has been lost. Those really are meaningless terms at this point.

Somebody on the radio called it "corporate socialism." I thought it was an interesting idea.
    "Suck a fat one, faggot."
-MikeL, showing off that sharp wit of his.

"You may recognize some of these chemicals. Let's start with cyanide...The one the Aum Shinrikyo cult attempted to use to commit mass murder in a Tokyo subway in May 1995...The same cyanide produced routinely--1.4 million tons per year--for use in the production of plastics, adhesives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and so on. It seems that those who put small amounts of cyanide in subways are terrorists. But those who produce it in mass quantities and contaminate broad reaches of soil, water, and air, killing countless living beings, are not terrorists, but rather capitalists, and are counted among the finest and most powerful people on the planet."

-Derrick Jensen, "What We Leave Behind"

"You know what's weird to me is Christians who are against the death penalty. After all, if it weren't for the death penalty, we wouldn't celebrate Easter!"

    -the late, great, Bill Hicks

And that's the bottom line right there. Caught between both the corporate execs and the consumers who leaned too far over the edge are those who planned, purchased and met their obligations responsibly and sensibly.

I heard that phrase too - exactly what it is.

When groups of unelected people can rape the world the way they are and then blackmail governments into giving them a country's money when they blow it....

Hate to bring this down to a popular culture level but people should try watching "Rollerball" again, skipping the games and just concentrating on the main part of the movie. It's taken 30 odd years but I think we are finally there....

The worst part of all of this mess is that it has now set a precedent. The genie is well and truly out of the bottle.
A man could lose himself in a country like this.

Ditto. Maybe this belongs in the election thread, but my disappointment in
this issue/decision and the degeneration of the campaigns themselves and
everything surrounding the process has left me utterly disgusted. Hate to
invoke Moore here, but dude, where's my country? Oh, here it is, lounging
    at the spa.
