    Default Martin Scorsese

Finally watched "The Departed" the other night. I didn't realise this was his first oscar nod as director, which seems a bit of a crime in itself when you consider his back catalogue.

I absolutely loved this film though and it got me thinking about what his best films have been. Even though the guy is obviously a genius behind the camera I often find his "over stylisations" wear a bit thin after a while. I didn't really go for "Gangs of NY" or "Casino" or even "Mean streets".

For me, I have always thought his greatest were "raging bull" and of course "goodfellas", but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I actually think "The Departed" really is his best flick to date. Perhaps it's the incredible acting that elevates it but I just love the way it was made.

For fun, my top five would probably be:

    The Departed
    Raging Bull
    Goodfellas
    The Aviator
    Taxi Driver

    Anyone feel the same?

Not much (as in, any movie) tops Goodfellas imo, but The Departed is right behind it in my book. Mark Wahlbergs character was hillarious, along with Alex Baldwin. Great flick. Really like Casino too though.
    Dealing with it.

I love Martin Scorsese! I thought "The Departed" was brilliant. It made you realize that Leonardo DiCaprio has come such a long way since Titanic. I only wish that Mark Wahlberg would have picked up the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

Other favorite Scorsese films include "Casino", "The Color of Money", and "Cape Fear".

Scorsese is one of the greats and my opinions thereof pretty much run parallel
to Graeme's. Great minds, eh? Wasn't a big fan of Gangs, but thought he and
DiCaprio did justice to Howard Hughes in The Aviator. A lot of great peformances
in that film. The way of the future. The way of the future. The way of the future...

Taxi Driver #5? WTF??? If you really appreciated Scorsese, #1 would be obvious.

    Just kiddin', dude. Mine are:
    1. Taxi Driver
    2. The Departed
    3. Raging Bull
    4. Gangs of New York
    5. Goodfellas

Not much love for Gangs it seems. The graphic violence was hard to take at times, but I thought Daniel Day-Lewis was outstanding. For someone to pull off a villian of that magnitude, while wearing a Snidely Whiplash mustache and top hat....there's some acting skills, my friends. (oops, I said "my friends")

    Have never seen The Aviator.

Looks like De Niro and Scorsese are going to make another Mob film together.

No prob with the violence. Day-Lewis was great. But other than that, not
so much with Diaz and Leo in that one. But you are dead-on about Taxi
Driver. Although Raging Bull is prolly the definitive Scorsese for me.
Departed was great, as well. An amazing script. Cape Fear. "I got you
now, bitch!" De Niro was awesome in that.

yeah, I'm not sure why the violence bothered me so much in Gangs, cuz there's a fair amount of violence in all Scorsese, to say the least. Maybe it was because Leo was one of his victims....and that scene goes on and on. I have to admit though, I do peek through my fingers at DDL's headbanging move. What a trip!

Haven't seen RB in a long time. I'll have to rent it, and quick, if I am to have any credibility with Jimmy812!

I'm really looking forward to "Shutter Island".....Scorsese's back with Leo with that one.....one of the best books I've read this year....and with Marty directing, should be pretty creepy.

My thoughts exactly on DiCaprio You could always tell from the start that he had the potential to be great but for a while it looked like Hollwood was going to ruin him, just trading on the pretty boy looks with lots of vacuous roles. Thankfully, his talent has shone through. Can you imagine earlier in his career if someone pitched the idea for departed starring DiCaprio ....

Well, he's a tough kid who has criminal connections who goes undercover, even serves a little jail time to get a background, and then gets into the mob after kicking the crap out of some "made" men in a diner etc etc

You'd be laughed out of the room.

I won't try and put a list in a particular order, but...

    Goodfellas
    Taxi Driver
    The King of Comedy
    The Departed
    Cape Fear

I've always thought After Hours was very underrated. I felt The Departed was a return to form, seeing as I was never struck on Gangs of New York or The Aviator, and the films before them, like Bringing Out the Dead were disappointing.

Wow, this is cool. Marty has his own thread.

And, graeme, just to clarify your first post, "The Departed" was Scorsese's first Oscar win, not nomination (I'm sure that's what you meant). He's been nominated 5 times prior for directing, and twice for writing.

    My Top 10 favorites are:
    1) Goodfellas
    2) The Departed
    3) Taxi Driver
    4) Raging Bull
    5) The Color of Money
    6) Casino
    7) Mean Streets
    8) The Aviator
    9) The King of Comedy
    10) After Hours

I'm looking forward to next year's "Shutter Island." Great book!
