Default I'd Never Heard Of Plum Island But Al Qaeda Has

Normally I'd post this in my blog in the premium section but it's slow on the links and this was kind of interesting to me so:

    http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/al-qaed...n-connecticut/

Aafia Siddiqui is believed to be an al-Qaeda operative. Among the documents in her possession were handwritten notes referring to a “mass-casualty attack” listing locations commonly known to be targets: Wall Street, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, and the Empire State Building. But one target, Plum Island, remains virtually unknown to the American public. If Siddiqui really is an al-Qaeda operative, the consideration that this government facility (officially known as the Plum Island Animal Disease Research Center) is a target is unnerving.

Located approximately eight miles off the coast of Connecticut, the 840-acre research facility is home to the most virulent zoonotic diseases in the world. The lethal diseases stored and studied on Plum Island are transmitted to humans by animals. The only U.S. strains of foot-and-mouth disease (eradicated from American soil in 1929) are secured in freezers on Plum Island, as are strains of polio, hog cholera, and African Swine Fever. None of the animals on the island ever leave; those that come uninvited, like deer that sometimes swim there from the mainland, are shot.
In one way, it's cool that we have a place like this. In another way, the fact that it's so close to NYC gives me the willies.

What freaks me out is that fucking deer can swim 8 miles.

Michael Phelps ain't shit when it comes to swimming, a white tail could kick his ass all day long.

Deer are actually excellent swimmers. It's not uncommon to find deer holed up on small islands in lakes during the hunting season. I dunno about 8 miles, but they can and often do swim.

I go on vacation twice a year to the CT shoreline and Plum Island is visible from the beach we always go to. It is widely known by the citizens on the shore line for years, even before anyone ever thought it could be a terrorist target. I've been boating out near it and it is just a general rule that you stay away from it. There aren't any obvious security measures from the water, well other than there always being a coastguard boat nearby. but I would imagine it is a pretty tough place to get in to. Also at night it is lit up like a Christmas tree. Travel a few miles north up the Long Island sound and you are now in the lovely waters of Millstone Nuclear Power Plant, where there are always armed guards at every little dirt road that leads to the grounds of it, and a few more miles you have the Groton Sub Base.
I used to jog but the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass.

There is a monkey island in SC near where we vacation at Edisto Island...we are one of the "boatloads" of people hanging around.....

(Charleston-AP) December 19, 2005 - Boatloads of curious people are still stopping by what is commonly known as Monkey Island on the Morgan River near Beaufort.

Morgan Island is a breeding ground for research monkeys and is under new management. The 400-acre island is home to about 6,000 monkeys.

The free-ranging breeding colony was set up in 1979. In 2002, the state refused to renew a lease with the facility's former operators and now has a two-year with Alpha Genesis.

The company is raising the profile of a place that's long been less-than-hospitable to visitors with signs warning people to stay away.

But, boatloads of the curious still stop and spend hours watching monkeys scamper about the island's oaks and pines, jockeying for territory and testing dominance
