    Default Rick Rubin

Man, I wish the guys would go into the studio with Rick Rubin for a new album.
The new Metallica sounds freakin' awesome.
I don't know that Ed would let it happen... but can you imagine the deep, ballsy sound Rubin could get out of the best rock band in the world?
I don't feel like Al's drums have been properly recorded/mixed/mastered since "Balance."

I'm not a huge Metallica fan but I love the sound he got out of those guys with the new album.

Really? I like the Bob Rock sound better (minus St. Anger, that sounds horrible).

I want to strangle Lars with his snare drum sound on the new songs. Sounds like one of the kids playing paint buckets in New York City.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

There is too much snare on the new Metallica, but it still sounds great.

I liked Bob Rock until I saw "Some Kind Of Monster", where it seemed like he was trying to be in the band rather than produce the band.

I think Rick Rubin would do well with Van Halen, but he won't give in to Eddie, so that's probably not going to happen.

What's Mike Post up to these days? Ouch!

If their new tracks had Lars' drum sound from the Black Album........it might be their best album ever.

It's a good album, but I wouldn't go that far. I think it ranks behind their 1st 4 and maybe behind Black as well, but ahead of anything they have released since the Black Album.

This album sounds like it was made around 1990, somewhere between And Justice... and the Black Album.

Except "Unforgiven III" is worthless and should be removed from the album.

Huh? On all one album and five greatest hits bonus tracks they've released since then? You make it sound like there are albums worth of material on which Alex's drums haven't been recorded properly.

Regarding the Metallica album, I find the comments here funny, since the Boston Globe criticized the new album for the mix - because the bass guitar is basically hidden behind the guitars, drums, and vocals. Which of course probably explains why Van Halen fans like it, because we had years of wondering where Michael Anthony's bass was in the mix.

I was thinking the same thing...first time i heard the song, i thought the guitars/bass/vocals sounded great...then i kept hearing that snare drum to the point, where thats all i was hearing, it was driving me nuts.

Indeed. No Rick Rubin for Van Halen.

Rubin has become an "all star" producer, of course. But he's not much of a presence in the recording studio anymore, opting instead to work more with bands on arranging ahead of time. The last producer VH had that didn't spend much time with them while they were recording was Mike Post. Post is an excellent musician, but for a producer VH needs to have someone overlooking things from day-to-day. And that someone shouldn't be EVH; it should be someone who is very organized and pushes the band to work hard, play hard, and keep some spontaneity in what they're doing.
