    September 11th Tribute

Since it's been 7 years since that awful day, I thought we could have a thread dedicated to the heroes, victims and the countless others that were affected.

I've used the same avatar since it was created for this board. Also, my sig says it all.

I think of all those people who were burned alive and jumped out of windows everyday.I think about their kids, wives, girlfriends, brothers, aunts, uncles
cousins, boyfriends and significant others. And I think how hate must end on this planet or eventually the human race will too. RIP

My husband just left for 2 days of reserve duty at Andrews AFB in DC. He is going to a monument dedication tonight at the Pentagon....

Each Sept 11th I try to do something "fun" wether it be going out to eat, ect... to celebrate all the people that died and lived through that day.

This is a day that brings out so many emotions in me. At this moment, I am angry, in a little while I may be ready to sob.

I don't think I've cried (as an adult) more that once or twice but going to Ground Zero got me really close. Credit to those brave emergency workers who put their lives on the line to save as many people as possible.

I can't believe it's been 7 years - feels like so long ago yet so recently all at the same time.

Yeah, it's still hard to fathom that there's this big gaping hole in New York City and the events that caused it to be there. I don't think I'll ever be able to put enough years between now and that day as long as I'm alive.

I won't ever forget it. HH and I went to NY and saw ground zero. The vibe at that place is one I won't ever forget as long as I live. It was like standing in a electricity field.

Does everyone remember exactly what you were doing?

I had just dropped my youngest at preschool and was in Sam's Club getting some stuff. I was walking by the TV's (when they still showed TV not the pre programmed stuff) and was like WHAT THE HELL? They had just cut to the 1st tower and as I stood there rooted to the floor I saw #2 hit....I raced out of Sam's and picked up both my kids at school.

I spent the next several hours contacting all our friends in DC that worked at the pentagon, ect...

I'd like to add, that I had just moved to Charlottesville from Scott AFB ) O'Fallon IL). My husband was still AT Scott AFB and would not be separating from the AF until Sept 29th 2001. I was in a total panic. Would they let him out, would we have to move back, ect.... AND I couldn't get in touch with him. He was detained on base as they had locked it down...no in , no out.

In a stroke of luck (for us)....they had a stop loss (no more people separating from the military) on Sept 30th. He made it out of active duty by 1 freaking day.

He is still active duty reserves, 2 yrs until he is retirement eligible - he's a Lt Col. - There's always the possibility of his being activated and would do so with a proud, patriotic heart.

I fly for a living and have flown in and out of the NY area since 1998. From the air, one could always find NY city by the Towers. Even on a hazy day, that was the first thing you saw was the WTC. To this day it's still strange to not have the towers there. Going into LaGuardia we fly right over the Hudson river and I look out the window and see that hole in the ground and still can't get over what happened there.

I lost my job as a direct result of 9-11, and yet so many lost so much more.

I was on my way to work right now 7 yrs ago listening to it on the radio. They were interviewing some guy on the ground when the second one hit. I remember just shaking my head wondering wtf was going on.

I remember approaching this big group of trees on the highway and this crop duster came right over the top of them and flew right over me. Scared the crap out of me...kinda funny, but not.

I was watching tv when I flipped channels in time to see the breaking announcement of one of the Towers being on fire. When the second plane hit and it started to dawn on everyone that this was no accident, that we were under attack, I went numb like everyone else. It didn't register. It did later when I realized that a friend of mine, a flight attendant for United, had been scheduled to leave that day on a flight. For the next few days I tried to get ahold of her, even searching to find any listing of names on the doomed flights. I found her last name on one of the passenger lists but I knew in the chaos that things could have gotten messed up, but the first name was wrong also, so I was pretty sure it wasn't her. I finally got a message from her Friday night. She was stuck in Florida when all the planes had been grounded and she was without a computer and phone communications were limited, but at least she was okay. Unfortunately she told me later that she had flown and was friends with a couple of the crew that had been on one of the flights.

On another note, my boyfriend had been on a fishing trip with his buddies in a remote part of Canada and had no idea what had happened until they tried to get back into the US. He said they eventually had to "sneak" across the border because they were not letting anyone in.

September 11 opened all of our eyes as to how fragile life is. I hope we never forget. I never will.

I was at school. Didn't hear a thing until I got into my car with my Dad after. I don't think we had ever said, "OH MY GOD"...more in our lives than on that day.

Still to this day seeing video of what happened that gives me chills.

    I'll never forget that day.
