Look at the headstock on the Frankie! Looks almost like a reverse EBMM!

Enough that you can put any neck on your replica frankie and it will still be accurate.

Still, I wonder if that shape later inspired the EBMM design for his headstock on their guitars. It is just too close to be a coincidence I think...

I'm pretty sure EBMM was using those headstocks long before the EvH model.
As a matter of fact, my understanding is that the EvH model was designed and marketed as the "AXIS" before the EvH endorsement came along.
Then when Ed left EBMM, they made a few minor changes and renamed it the AXIS once again.

The picture posted above was from when Ed was working with Brian May on the "Star Fleet Project". Prior to that, I think I remember seeing that neck on the "See Ya" guitar.

What surprises me is the Coors can next to Brian May. One would think he would have been drinking a stronger, non-American beer.

Ahh.. I see. Do any pre-EVH axis's exist then?! Or were they just in the process of marketing it and then slapped his name on them before release?

    Good question ...
The only reason I know this is because I posted on the EBMM forum a long time ago that I thought the EVH model was basically responsible for the success of the AXIS. Then one of the EBMM factory guys chimed in and set me straight.

I'm not too sure of the exact time-line, but some of the early EMBB EVH prototypes actually have the "AXIS" name on the headstock.

I own an EBMM EVH and on my owners manual, it shows the guitar with neither the AXIS name or the EVH signature. My understanding is that these manuals were printed during the transition period, so I can only assume there are some "pre-EvH" Axis models out there.

Doesn't say "Axis," but EVH's #1 Ernie Ball EVH (Amber w/ 5150 logo) does
not have his sig on the headstock.

I think the Axis referred to can be seen in the pic of Ed with a white/ivory one sitting on a '56 Chevy or something.

Also, in the album pictures to the Carnal Knowledge album, there appear to be EBMM EVH unfinished one-offs/protos with thicker bodies.
How open-minded do I have to be before my brains start spilling out?

yeah i have seen several ebmm "axis" guitars....i think the alvin lee was originaly called it before production went ahead, i think they just named all their prototype guitars the same name until either a signiture came along or they were ready for full production.

This is correct. The story, as I remember it, is that the original EVH body design was already being developed by Ernie Ball when Eddie came onboard. The prototype guitars all wore the "Axis" name on the headstock. There are pics of Eddie holding a prototype of his EVH guitar with the name Axis on the headstock.

There are no production Axis guitars before EBMM officially changed the name from EVH to Axis after Eddie left. There are non-sig EVH guitars that were produced between the time that Eddie left EBMM, and the time that EBMM started calling the EVH the Axis. There were also Axis guitars sold in Japan that have the same electronics configuration and non-sig headstock as the American EVH non-sig.

To be clear, don't let anyone try to sell you a pre-production EBMM/EVH with no signature, or a pre-EVH Axis. This would be a scam. THESE GUITARS DO NOT EXIST!
