    Default The Montreal Forum today

No doubt most if not all of the forum readers have seen the VH live in Montreal '84 video. Well, last weekend I was in Montreal and decided "Why not go check out the Forum, where The Mighty Van Halen once rocked?" I discovered that it's now the Pepsi Forum and is really no more than a shopping mall. There's a AMC multiplex and a few other stores inside. Nothing much to see now.

There's a small seating section that remains. It appears to be original. I was sitting there yesterday morning when I struck up a conversation with a cute French Canadian girl. I explained to her why I was there. When I told here that VH rocked the Forum back in '84, she replied -- much to my chagrin -- that she wasn't even born then. And who was Van Halen? I pulled out my iPod and made her listen to Jump. "Oh yeah. I know that song," she remarked. "But I don't know Van Halen." Yikes.

I sat in one of the seats and listened to "Little Guitars" from the '84 Forum show. It was fun to sit there and realize that I was in the building where that famous show was shot.

Here's a short vid of pics from the venue as it is now. Hope you all enjoy it.

    Cheers,

    Rob

I wouldn't say it is the bet boot ever. I would say the 82' Maryland show is the best by far.

Me either, and I agree with you 100% about Largo '82 being much better than Montreal '84. I have both. Plus, the '83 South American shows are phenomenal too! Buenos Aires, and Sao Paulo to be sure!

For me, VH in Montreal '84 was the first boot I ever bought. I think it's hard to divorce myself from the initial impression it made. For me, it's the best VH live boot.

The way I came across it was, on my way to work (I worked nights for a horrible company at the time), I stopped in at 7-Eleven and checked the Rolling Stone classifieds for anyone advertising live audio or video tapes. I found a guy named Eric Paradis in Canada with a whole bunch of stuff. I sent him a letter and requested his catalog and then ordered the VH Montreal and US Festival vids. Two of the best purchases of my life :-).

One thing I loved about the Montreal boot was seeing and hearing the crowd explode. I don't think I've seen a rock crowd that excited. It makes today's shows look like a funeral.

Ah, I've been there for a couple of shows and it was a fantastic place to see a gig. I wish I had seen VH, but I did see Gabriel and Sting on seperate occasions there.

I had the pleasure of early concept "Golden Circle" tickets for Gabriel and it certainly enhanced the occasion measurably! The place was so small that he made it come alive with ease.

I will miss The Forum as a concert venue.

I'm sure that the Montreal video has sentimental value for you, but, there are better performances from the band than this. 1984 was a very different tour. They were suddenly shot into the stratosphere not only from the commercial success of 1984, but the MTV videos as well. They no longer performed as closely. Each guy took his fifteen minutes alone time on stage, where previously, they didn't do that. Delve back further if you want greatness.

Well, I can agree about the funeral part lol! It was a whole different animal back then. If you think the crowd noise at Montreal was great, try Largo on for size.
