    Default 5150 w/ Acoustic Drums

I'm sure this has been put out there before but I couldn't find it. What does everyone think -- how different would the album "5150" be if Al has used acoustic drums? I would love to hear some of the songs updated w/ a new acoustic drum track layered on top. Although the Simmons drums added a new sound that the band was obviously striving for, there are definitely some tracks that are dying for a little more punch and the electronic drums seem to "mute" the overall sound. I would also believe that Ed adjusted his guitar sound to fit the drum sound.

I think the electronic drums were a good fit for "Why Cant This Be Love" but the rest of the album would have sounded a lot better with acoustic drums. Sometimes it sounds like Alex is beating on a stack of magazines or something. Just doesnt have any balls behind it. All you gotta do is listen to the later live performances of those songs to have some idea how the album would sound with acoustic drums. "Dreams" especially.

Yeah, this has been covered fairly well in the past. I think most fans of 5150 would love to hear that disc with acoustic drums sub'd for the elec. ones.

You're right, it was what they or Alex was going for back in the mid 80's but it sure dates that record now.

Here are some good examples of what it could have been like:

Though it'd be my guess VH would never release the original recording tapes to an engineer for such an experiment, with today's technology it would not be hard to convert those original AVH drum tracks to "acoustic" drums (by sampling Alex's acoustic kit and replacing each hit with the appropriate drum, thus preserving the original performance but substituting a different drum sound). I like the Simmons drums for some songs--"Why Can't This Be Love" and "Dreams." But if you listen to "Love Walks In," Al plays acoustic drums on the entire song except for the very end--and when he hits the electronic drums they just sound terrible and out of place. So, on that song at least, you can get a sampling of the two back-to-back.

I was all prepared to say it's like "Fuck It: The 80s" listening to that record,
but then Dick Cinnamon comes along with the magazines crack (rotflmao at
the name and the comments - you should post more often) and I instantly
see the other side of the argument. It does sound like he's beating the shit out
of his kitchen or something. But again, I can see the art in that and it won't
bother me to not hear Simmons in Dreams anymore than I won't be bothered
to hear some of those songs anyhooch.

I think Van Halen did it right with the electrics on 5150. The songwriting and overall attitude helped make it work, too.

Example of a band that did electrics wrong: Blue Öyster Cult on The Revolution By Night. The songwriting also helped...to make a bad album, that is.

I love the electronice drums on 5150. They are totally 80's but I really like the way they sound. If I were a drummer I would probably think other wise, but as a guitarist and producer I think they sound awesome. They gave the album a neat vibe!

I don't mind the old drum track, so much as I find it completely impossible to notice. I have no memory of them at all. That's not great even if it's not so bad.

I like the Simmons drums also and I am a drummer. I think he could have tweaked the sounds a little better on the toms to make it sound not so dry though. The way they sound on LWAN is awsome! The 5150 tour was my first real concert when I was 15 and I was blown away with his drumset. So much that I worked all summer long and saved up and bought my own simmons set.

I still have the whole thing and use a couple of the pads in my VH tribute BalancE. I do a typical AVH solo and do that drum build up at the end on one of the pads. Check out myspace.com/balancevhtribute. My solo is around there somewhere.

That drum fill in "5150" wouldn't have sounded nearly as cool without that electronic sound.

Did Al use triggers on his drums to get the sound live during the 5150 and OU812 tours? I swear his toms have a very electronic sound on the early tours.

He played the Simmons drums primarily for toms and kicks on the 1984 tour, 5150 album, and 5150 tour. He kept the Simmons' for his kicks on OU812 but otherwise went back to acoustic drums.

Thanks hammerguy, haven't watched the japan tour lately. I think that was when van hagar was at there peak. possibly that one show. they did some great stuff after that, but that show was one of the last that you could say Eddie just smoked. Sams voice was still incredibly strong and they just ripped it up on stage!
