Default Van Halen to McCain: No You Can't

John McCain used a Van Halen song during his big speech earlier today and the band wants to make one thing clear -- they're not running with McCain.

Van Halen management tells us the band had no idea McCain was planning on using "Right Now" during his big entrance in Ohio telling us, "Permission was not sought or granted nor would it have been given." Reported by tmz.

"Right Now"? What era is that song from? I see no acknowledgement of it on Van Halen's website. Why are they concerned about it?

They probably don't want to be in any way, shape, or form involved with politics. Some people could/would consider that an endorsement. I see their point.

OOh good one, I really think someone at TMZ is a Van Halen fan, they cover them quite a bit compared to other entertainment news outlets.

The Minnesota Twins have taken the field at all home games for the past several years to "Right Now"--but they licensed the use of it. (Sought permission to use it publicly, in other words.)

Use of a song in a national political campaign often suggests an endorsement from the artist. Van Halen was concerned with one or both of the following: Use of their song publicly and on national broadcast without permission (which is illegal); The false notion that they have endorsed John McCain for president.

its a political statement that will reference van halen as supporters of McCain in him using their song. they obviously dont want to have anything to do with his politics.

The video for right now was updated on the 2004 tour. It wasn't too kind to Bush.

VH had anti-Bush images on the video screen during the 2004 campaign. Me thinks AVH is the Democrat in the bunch. EVH was probably too drunk to ever get into politics. Dave's political views, as expressed on his radio show, are more on the side of boppity-bopitty-bop-ism! Mike is neutral. Sam apparently is a republican, he probably mistakenly thinks they're in favor of smoking dope!

Even though Sammy donated money to his primary campaign in 2003. I don't get that guy's politics.

Guys, if this becomes some political argument, I'm going to close it like I did the other one. We have threads specifically designed for these discussions, and I don't want a topic on Van Halen to become one of these political battles.

Just a word to the wise.

A lot of candidates have used VH music during campaigns. I don't think using a song implies an endorsement of the candidate and it is even more shallow when one of the candidates named a kid after the bands name. Typical of VH to 'dis' a fan like this.

I don't know a thing about copyright laws but I doubt they can prevent the use of the song. If you buy a CD and pop it in and play it you are not breaking any laws that I've ever seen. If they were making people pay to attend an event (such as a sports event) that would be different but the use of a song at a political rally wouldn't be any different than playing a song at a party. BTW, once something become 'news' most copyright laws are voided at least as I have seen in the past.

If you buy a CD or song you have every right to play it as long as you don't copy it or profit from it.

I do agree it is very disappointing that the band would complain and I would think they would like the free advertisment that will probably get a few thousand people to seek it out and purchase the song.

    Typical VH.

I do wonder what Bill Clinton thought about Obama's folks playing Robert Palmer's 'Addicted to Love' after he spoke at the DNC. Right after a cheesy remake version U2's 'Beautiful Day' they went into A2L. They cut the volume right after the line 'might as well face it' but the crowd was singing along and proudly sung 'you're addicted to love' as Hillary was proudly smiling in approval. I couldn't stop laughing when I heard that.

I think Sam is more or less a small 'l' libertarian in the mold of Ron Paul.
