In A Word, Whoa: Jason Becker Plays Paganini

Honestly...I could start practicing years ago and not be playing this now. The track may be familiar to those that have seen the film "Crossroads", starring Ralph Machio.

    Jason Becker - # 5 Paganini (2:16)

Kinda gives you good reason to throw out all of your Yngwie records (if you even had any in the first place) doesn't it?

Freakin mind blowing to say the least.

Very sad what happened to Jason and I wish him only the very best.

One could only wonder what would have happened with his career. Serious talent.

I've actually never explored Jason's playing very much, but I've done a ton of reading about him and interviews, etc. He is absolutely inspiring in all senses, and I can't help but be moved by what he says. So I can easily say I've been influenced by him, but ironically not on the guitar.

Nice post, Chef. I love Jason Becker and he will always be one of my favorites.

Here is a story that was done by a local Bay Area channel on Jason. It's about 19+ minutes and I warn you, it is hard not to avoid tears watching this.

Jason's life story is amazing - I like his work with DLR better, though.

Yeah he plays this Paganinni thing fast. But the method to master this piece is very simple. You have to practice it with a metronome and slowly increase the tempo. Practice the right hand (picking technique), then the left. There's nothing mysterious really.

Someone like EVH or Stach write better, more memorable leads and also less predictable. For example the outro solo of Drop Dead Legs, with parts that are totally "outside," to use a jazz term, is really amazing both technically and creatively.

Found that interesting him covering Black Star at the end of that video. Almost looks like he did a Frankenstrat pattern on his pickguard.

Well I wish it was as easy as playing Paganni slow and just speeding it up. I have been trying that for years and can't even play it half speed. You can say the same thing for Satch as you can for Jason. Both have not written an Unchained, Panama, HFT, RWTD, I'm the One, etc so there is no comparison to an EVH. Jason probably got ALS at an earlier age then when Satch put out Surfing so who knows what he could have done had he never gotten the disease.

When I read this, I realized I come off making Satch look bad. Wanted to clarify myself before I get flamed. Great guitarist but you really can't compare him to Eddie since he is 95% an instrumentalist. Its a different animal writing solely for guitar than a lead vocal. At least I believe so.

    Great story!

Oh how we complain about the little things in life, most of it's not important. Very inspiring, reminds us to keep things in perspective.

while i find jasons story incredibly inspiring, i really cannot stand his style of playing, i respect it hugely, but i dont really like it. i used to dick around with the steve vai version of it (he calls it eugines trick bag, taken from the crossroads movie) but i kinda matured in my tastes and started thinking more about dynamics and songs in general.
that being said.....he is awsome, such a tragic story, but ya know the guy is an insiration to all of us, not just musicians.

And with that I'm off to the kitchen to make myself a lesbian omelette...LLFHS in response to one of Graeme's post's

"I'm a 45-year-old man, and I still like to wear a thong or a speedo when I go swimming.
Not because I have a great body, it's just an easy way to make sure I have the hotel swimming pool all to myself."...Bullwinkle for quite obvious reasons!

Unfortunately, Jason didn't get the chance to mature in his tastes like you have been able to in your life, because he was only 20 years old when he contracted ALS. 2-0. Thinking about the era that he grew up in and where guitar playing was at during that time, none of us have any idea how he would have matured as he got older. DLR was his first real band and he played most of that album barely hanging on as his physical body was rapidly deteriorating.

We might have a small glipse of Jason's musical mind as he wrote music on an album called "Perspective" that he did years after he contracted ALS with special software that allowed him to build songs one note at a time. Michael Lee Firkins, whose legato playing is just plain sick, played what Jason wrote.

I'm of the personal belief that if Jason didn't contract ALS, we'd be sitting here talking about the legendary music, not just guitar playing, that he'd produced over the years.

Here is "End of Beginning" with Firkins doing the guitar parts:

Here is a vocal harmony called "Higher." Simply beautiful:
