    Default Wolfgang string problem

Lately I have developed a style of play where I rake the shit out of the strings. The problem is the high e and sometimes even the b catch the pickup that is popping out and get stuck there. Needless to say its a pain in the ass. Anyone else have this problem? Is there a guitar that can get the type of sound a Wolf has but doesn't have pickups like that?

Also another problem I'd like to add is that my strings get annoying buzzing sounds. I took it twice back to the store for the guy to fix. The second time the bastard charged me twice as much as the first time. What is the cause of this? Thanks all...

Is your pickup popping out and perhaps too close to the strings? Buzzing is probably from fret wear... my guess.

Buzzing could be lots of things, bad strings, maybe frets need re-dressing, maybe you took all the strings off at once and messed the action up...maybe the neck got a little warped.

I'm not sure what the "popping out" comment was referring to.

Do you mean the strings are getting stuck under the bobbins (the black and/or cream plastic part)? It happens with uncovered humbuckers. Dimebag would use tape to keep that from happening, and his signature Deans have covers over the edges:

Getting caught under the pickups? Wow almost all my guitars are unconvered PU's, I don't think I've ever had that happen, and definitely not on my Wolfgang.

I actually have that same problem with my OLP. It's usually the high e that gets caught under the front pickup. Like someone said before, taping the pickup probably is the best idea. I too rake the crap out of the strings but as far as the buzzing goes, have you tried altering the bridge or truss rod? Actually, heightening the strings would probably help with the buzzing, my guitars have pretty high action, and no buzzing. Just an idea.

The answer is simple: It's operator error. If you play hard and "push" the strings off the fingerboard, they're going to get stuck. Certainly the intonation can't be very good if you're playing the strings that hard (sharp!). I used to play quite hard and had all kinds of string breaking problems, and I almost never sounded in tune. Lighten up your play, move your right hand less, and all should be better.

I agree, I used to be a chronic string breaker, never pulled strings off the board like that, but every gig I'd break a string. Lightened up my play, I haven't broken a string live in 5 or 6 years.

I would change strings on all three gig guitars the night before shows and then break at least two at the show. (This was maybe 12 years ago.) Now I break maybe one string a year. And--hello--I play in tune. There's a lot of nuance to be found in playing lighter, not to mention less playing fatigue and overall better precision.

I know the "stuck under the pickup" problem Space_Cowboy is describing because it used to happen to me on my Wolfs also (and my EBMM, and my Ibanez, and my other open coil guitars). It sucks when it happens, but it's not so much a design flaw so much as it is just heavy playing.

I am rougher on my strings than Ike was with Tina Turner. I only pushed my E off the fretboard once though. Never did the pickup thing. I rarely break a string however I do switch up my guitars every set. Was proud two weeks ago. Played a 6 hour show and did not break a string.

    Default Just a thought

I have been reading the vhforum for 3 years now each day. I finally joined today because I wanted to voice something. I find it extraordinarily offensive and in bad taste for user AndrewThomas.net to use this VAN HALEN board to purvey his political advertisments. I think all political banners should be banned from this site. It's about the music, not purveying any political agendas. Thank you.

Well there was a problem with the action but the guy fixed it. He said the buzzing could come from humidity or temperature. I really don't want to start playing around with shit and mess it up. I'm not at all handy when it comes the things like that. I don't take all the strings off at once because I found out the hard way that it will mess it up.
The whole string getting caught under the pickup is something that has been more of a recent problem. Its happend a bit in the past but I'm starting to write songs and this one song where I use hard upstrokes always causes this problem. I'm not going to change the way I play because thats how the song is supposed to be. I'll just start playing it on a acousitc guitar because it will probably sound better on it anyway. If I played a les paul or something it wouldn't happen ever because the pickups don't stick out like that but I don't like les pauls. That idea of taping it might be what I need.. Thank guys
