Default Belt tightening anyone? a tips on economizing thread

Ok, the business downturn has been affecting my businesses for a few years now, and I have been pinching pennies to make up the difference.

But I'm finding that some of the "homefront" economizing tips, aren't very helpful, so I'm just wondering, what are you all doing to tighten your belts?

Personally I hate the mother f'n utility companies, but tips on saving in that department, while working, are more of a long term savings than short term.

So, what have you all found to be good tactics to economize (in all areas)?

I'm buying about 4 cords of wood next week and turning my water heater down to "kinda hot" from "blister your ass hot".

This is the stuff I do, and it's all just common sense.

Become friendly with the butcher and meat department workers at your local supermarket. You'll be able to get advance word on sales or products to be marked down in that section. Trust me, having worked retail, it's always refreshing to have someone come up and speak to you in a friendly manner rather than just bitching.

Clipping coupons and reading the weekly ad also helps a great deal. When shopping, make a reasonable list and attempt to budget for the bare necessities. And purchase generic or store brands whenever possible. By adding a dash of seasoning here and there, they'll taste just as good as their more expensive counterparts.

Also, try to shop in off hours, such as very early on weekends. There are less cars on the road (less gas used in traffic) and less people to deal with at the supermarket. Make an effort to plan your trips to be as economical as possible. If you need to drive miles out of your way to save money on one item, reconsider the need for the purchase.

If no one is at home during the day, reset your ac thermostat to a setting that merely keeps the house cool, then turn it up when everyone is home. Lower it again before bed.

Regulate your laundry. It doesn't make sense to run the washer and dryer for a 1/4 load, and it uses just as much water and electricity as a full load to do so.
"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man."

Power: Many electric companies offer an "on-call" program for certain higher usage apliances, such as A/C, water heater, pool heater, etc. Of course, this is useless if you don't have any of these items or they are powered by gas. Eight months of the year, we get $10 a month off the bill, the other four we get $5 a month off. We have also noticed a modest reduction by changing our lightbulbs over to flourescents.

High speed internet: Switched from cable to DSL and saved $15 a month. DSL doesn't download/upload quite as quickly, but I live with it and it's out less than the cable was.

Phone: Part of this is also included in the DSL. By bundling our long distance, local, DSL and DirecTV, we save an additional $20 a month.

Food is where we have saved the most though. Although I despise Wal-Mart, I have found that I can save $30-$40 per week by doing our grocery shopping there instead of Winn-Dixie or Publix.

My brother is the "king of the rain check" He shops sales just as they start to get the stuff on sale and just as they are about to end so that the item is out of stock so he can get a rain check to buy it again later at the sale price! He always says 'They don't tell me when it's on sale...I tell them when it's on sale"!

These might be a little random, and i'm probably not breaking any new ground here but:

In the summer we don't turn on our air until night time sleeping hours. We sleep comfortably when it's set at 76 degrees. In the morning we set the ac at 81 degrees and keep the windows shut. The house doesn't lose too much cool air and by dusk it's usually only around 80 degrees in the house (The ac doesn't even go on). bottom line, we don't use that much AC so that helps. Ceiling fans helps circulate air too.

Getting your cable, modem and phone in a package deal with one carrier saves a bunch.

If you don't have one, get a second freezer so if you find any deals, you can store food for a long time.

check websites for local stores (kohls, target, meijer, best buy) once and a while to see when stuff will go on sale.

Buy gas on Tuesdays. That's when the price is the lowest. That's alleged but pretty true for around my house.

Damn, I'm starting to feel a little too cheap or a little too girly right now. I can't decide which. I'll close this by saying I love boobies, football and Iron Maiden. OK, I'm good.

Stop buying porn, It's free on the internet!
Be a fan of a band like Van Halen, they don't put out many albums or tour as often, so you are spending less on entertainment.

But seriously, I think the obvious things help a bit. Turn off lights and turn down the thermostat when you are not home. Power off your PC. Even when home use electricity sparingly. If you live in an older home like I do insulate your attic. The insulation is relatively cheap and you can get a tax credit by doing so.

energy vampires! Get rid of them

what I mean is unplug every thing you aren't using.... don't just turn it off. It still draws energy when "off" but plugged in

As your light bulbs go out replace them with the new energy efficient ones...just dispose of these new bulbs carefully.

Wash all your clothes in cold water - I cheat I wash towels and sheets on hot (I have too, it creeps me out).

Going back to what chef said about generic/store brands, I do this quite often. However, lately I have come across items that did indeed have a lower price for the store brand, but when comparing the price per ounce, the national brand has been nearly identical in some cases. It pays to take the extra few seconds and compare the price per ounce on nearly everything, especially when comparing the "jumbo sizes" of some items, which are very often much more expensive than their smaller counterparts.

the biggest thing you can do, and this might sound silly, is sit down and budget what you spend on regular items. Once you do this you'll probably find all kinds of savings. For instance, everyone loves call waiting, call display, etc. But if you can get away with just a regular phone line you'll save a bunch of money. If you have a cell phone and you call the company and ask about lowering rates (it helps if you're nearing the end of a contract) you'll be amazed with the discounts that become avaiable. Getting a programable thermostat will save you a bunch of money as well.

The main place you'll find money though is in places you don't even notice. What I do, and it's pretty effective, is I transfer money from my chequing account to different savings accounts automatically the day after pay day. By doing this I'm assuring that money is there for everything I've budgeted (mortgage, bills, vacation, etc) and you'll see where all your money is going and you find spots where you can limit spending at that point.

you can try turning the temp down on your washing machine i turned mine down from 40 degrees c to 30 degrees c and saw an improvement on the very next bill. also the best way to save fuel and repair costs on your car is to service it regularly, generaly its quite simple and you can do it yourself in an afternoon (unless you own an exotic), and like everyone else has said, turn down yoyr a.c. and turn EVERYTHING you are not using.

Best thing we did is my wife started working from home. We each own a gas guzzling V8, and we were paying upwards of $200+ a WEEK in gas between the two of us doing normal work commutes and then weekend travels. Now that my wife works from home, her Tahoe sits from Sunday night - Friday night, and my truck sits most of the weekend. That cut our gas bills in half.
