Default 9-year-old boy told hes too good to pitch

    http://sports.yahoo.com/top/news?slu...v=ap&type=lgns

because i know some of us have troubles with links:

9-year-old boy told hes too good to pitch

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP)Nine-year-old Jericho Scott is a good baseball player too good, it turns out.

The right-hander has a fastball that tops out at about 40 mph. He throws so hard that the Youth Baseball League of New Haven told his coach that the boy could not pitch any more. When Jericho took the mound anyway last week, the opposing team forfeited the game, packed its gear and left, his coach said.

Officials for the three-year-old league, which has eight teams and about 100 players, said they will disband Jerichos team, redistributing its players among other squads, and offered to refund $50 sign-up fees to anyone who asks for it. They say Jerichos coach, Wilfred Vidro, has resigned.

But Vidro says he didnt quit and the team refuses to disband. Players and parents held a protest at the leagues field on Saturday urging the league to let Jericho pitch.

Hes never hurt any one, Vidro said. Hes on target all the time. How can you punish a kid for being too good?

The controversy bothers Jericho, who says he misses pitching.

I feel sad, he said. I feel like its all my fault nobody could play.

Jerichos coach and parents say the boy is being unfairly targeted because he turned down an invitation to join the defending league champion, which is sponsored by an employer of one of the leagues administrators.

Jericho instead joined a team sponsored by Will Power Fitness. The team was 8-0 and on its way to the playoffs when Jericho was banned from pitching.

I think its discouraging when youre telling a 9-year-old youre too good at something, said his mother, Nicole Scott. The whole objective in life is to find something youre good at and stick with it. Id rather he spend all his time on the baseball field than idolizing someone standing on the street corner.

League attorney Peter Noble says the only factor in banning Jericho from the mound is his pitches are just too fast.

He is a very skilled player, a very hard thrower, Noble said. There are a lot of beginners. This is not a high-powered league. This is a developmental league whose main purpose is to promote the sport.

Noble acknowledged that Jericho had not beaned any batters in the co-ed league of 8- to 10-year-olds, but say parents expressed safety concerns.

Facing that kind of speed is frightening for beginning players, Noble said.

League officials say they first told Vidro that the boy could not pitch after a game on Aug. 13. Jericho played second base the next game on Aug. 16. But when he took the mound Wednesday, the other team walked off and a forfeit was called.

League officials say Jerichos mother became irate, threatening them and vowing to get the league shut down.

I have never seen behavior of a parent like the behavior Jerichos mother exhibited Wednesday night, Noble said.

Scott denies threatening any one, but said she did call the police.

League officials suggested that Jericho play other positions, or pitch against older players or in a different league.

Local attorney John Williams was planning to meet with Jerichos parents Monday to discuss legal options.

You dont have to be learned in the law to know in your heart that its wrong, he said. Now you have to be punished because you excel at something?

This reminds me of that Little League star Danny Almonte, who it was discovered to actually be about 27, not 12. Or something like that.

Danny Almonte! what a coincidence that name came up....I was googling the chinese gymnasts age scandal the other day and came up with an article that amused me by referring to it as the "Reverse Almonte"!

still, I think at this young age you have to be careful about the physical development of the kids, and a kid throwing that hard could cause chronic injury...still if the kid is good, it would really be hard to hold him back...but what happens if he hurts another kid with a wild pitch....not worth it in little league

Whatever his age was, the guy was a fuckin' monster! I thought he was only 16, though? Still over the limit, regardless.

if he is indeed that good, there should be other leagues around for talented kids his own age...

or for the sake of the game, just ease up on the fast ball a bit...everyone wins.

I think the other parents are pissed that they are getting beat. To me it is totally unfair that this boy and his team are penalized for him being "too good". I know here, little league is not just to "promote the sport" it is dog eat dog. Prepares them for high school and college ball. Now everyone gets to play, good or not but you take your chances. Both my kids have played for several years. My daughter was not so great at first but each year she has gotten progressively better and learned so much. This year her team swept the league. One of our pitchers is the best out there right now-she throws 40-45mph almost everytime and no one wanted her to quit or play another slot. They might have wished she would have but it never came up. (She also is an excellent catcher as well)

Now I understand about 9 year olds-that kind of a ball is just too hard to hit for them-my son played with 9 and 10 year olds this year. He is a great player but struggled somewhat. He was a young 9 on this team. His team won the league too but did lose a few games. At 9 years old they seem to struggle with accuracy. However, if this boy is accurate and has never hit anyone...well I don't see the problem. If he was not consistent and threw wild pitches sometimes I could understand. I'm sure he is capable of throwing some-which could be dangerous-but it doesn't mean he will. I just hate that he is being penalized and not able to play because of it. I don't know any coach that would put him in the outfield if he is the best pitcher they have. I just think it is a little over the top here.

I certainly wouldn't want anyone to get hurt but I also know how the coaches and parents are about these sort of things and some of the statements in the article are very telling to me.

What a crock! What this boils down to is not other teams afraid of getting hurt, but other teams losing, and not wanting to.

The pussification of America is almost complete people, and we've stood by and watched it happen. Shame on all of us.

Several years ago, the league my niece played in did away with keeping score. There were no winners and losers, just players. You don't teach kids anything by doing that, I don't care if they're 5 or 15!

It's all about being PC, and it sucks.

    First, he's throwing 40 mph, not 90.

Second, use your brain and move the kid up one age bracket. Fucking duh. I played with kids a full year older than me, why can't this kid?

Third, nothing like teaching your kids to give up when the going gets tough.

if the kid is unhittable in the league, you move him to a higher league. If that's not possible you do what I've seen done numerous times and you limit the number of innings and one kid can pitch (when I played little league it was 2 innings per pitcher). But this doesn't sound like it has anything to do with the kid being too good but instead the kid's parents choosing the wrong team for him to play for. Just another example of parents screwing up team sports for their children. What a bunch of idiots.

The never ending crusade to pussify this country never ceases to amaze me. Give me a fucking break.

Stories like this make me miss the 70's and 80's more and more.

That absolutely sums this up! I played with kids of all different ages when I was in little league. There was this one kid, Rob, who was a brick SHITHOUSE when he was little. They moved him up to the "Pony" league. Done. No problem.

And your last comment is DEAD ON!!! "Hey kids, these guys are really good. There's no way to beat them, so.... let's just give up and walk away...." Nice role model, asshole!
