Default Best Peformances by Each Member

Choose one Van Halen song (no instrumentals allowed!) where each member of VH gives his best performance:

Eddie - I'm The One (An unbelievable shredfest from start to finish. More impressive than Eruption in my book)

Alex - Outta Love Again (Great drumming on this underrated tune)

Michael - Light Up The Sky (No camping out on the root note by Mikey on this one)

Dave - Everybody Wants Some! (Dave wails, squeals and delivers the classic lines during the breakdown on one of my all-time favorite VH songs)

Sammy - 5150 (Sammy is on top of his game on this title track from his first album with the band)

Gary - Fire In The Hole (This is the only song on VHIII that even sounds like Van Halen. WACF will always be the real "VHIII" in my book)
"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving is not for you"

"Be careful what you wish for because you just might lose what you already have"

"Women and Children First ... The REAL Van Halen III"

Dave and Ed are hard for me to nail down as there are so many.

For Sam, 5150 I think is his career highlight. Absolutely love that song, and he nails everything. Lyrics, melody, singing, all of it a home run.

Mike and Alex, I really don't know enough about drumming or bass playing to give an opinion.

Gary? I got nothing for his time in VH. His best performance for me is probably "Hole Hearted" with Extreme, but that is from a very shallow pool of information, as I don't like much of Extreme and I think VHIII is abysmal.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Alex - Hot For Teacher, I mean cmon!
    EVH - Mean Street
Mike - anything off of FUCK
    Sammy - 5150
DLR - Light Up The Sky and Van Halen II for the most part

    Alex: "Right Now" from LRHRN
Mike: "So This Is Love" from Fair Warning
Ed: "Push Comes To Shove" or "Hear About It Later" from Fair Warning
Dave: "Could This Be Magic" from Women And Children First (I'm dead serious. The carefree manner along with the humorous vocal asides really capture the essence of the guy.)

this is on a personal level for me:

Ed - 1984 concert in Columbia SC, he is playing the part in HFT (where he's on the desk on the video) but he's headed straight for my girl group (there were 4 of us) he comes within about 3 feet of us ....it was SO awesome

(just a note here. Val was sitting in the seats in front of us! he was aiming for her...a girl can dream though....ahhhhhh) she even turned around and looked faint - it was a real girl moment. I think she didn't even care that we all just about passed out with that impish grin and that smile coming right at us....mmm, mmmm, mmmm

    Alright....I'll move on.....

Dave same concert. It wasn't the singing - it was the stage performance...God he was so incredible. #2 to that would have been those assless chaps. I was 12 at that concert and it left a real impression on me WHEW!

    Alex- HFT ALWAYS

    Mike RWTD the opening

I think Sammy is OK I saw a few shows but to me....OK I'll not go there HEE HEE seriously I like Humans Being and Right Now. He has a great sound in Poundcake, too.

Gary is gay and VHIII in my opinion SUX

sorry I didn't follow the rules....

I agree with pretty much everything posted. I think the best sammy era performance as a whole has to be 5150 on LWAN.

Mike does an outstanding job on this song, but it's really a shame that, besides the opening bass line, he seems buried in the mix through a good part of it.

Not like this is a new thing though.

Yep. Tell the truth, simply going from memory I dunno if I'm hearing the album version or the one that showed up on late night tv...

Yup, yup, and yup on your Ed, Al, and Sam choices. Those were the songs that immediately popped into my head when I saw the thread title.

I can totally see your Dave choice, but if I had to go another way with it I'd go with Beautiful Girls for him. As for Mike.....eh, gotta be honest in that nothing really comes to mind. Light Up The Sky is as good a choice as anything else.

Eddie: On Fire (he sure was)
Mike: So this is Love (bass playing and harmonies)
Alex: Pleasure Dome (I loved his playing on this)
Dave: Hear About It Later (I love this song)
Sammy: Dreams (theres a reason why nobody else can sing this correctly, if you've ever tried it in the car while driving, by the time you get to you destination you have NO VOICE LEFT and need a water bottle)

Now to be fair to the other 2 VH alumni or currently still with them.

Gary: Year To The Day (along with Ed's playing it was a great song IMO)
Wolfie: So this is Love from the Philly cd boot I have, during the second solo you can really here some nice bass playing there. It sounds like he is playing more in a guitar style, but it still sounds cool. Whether or not it was him playing I do not know for sure, but I will give him the benefit of the doubt on it.
'Old Van Halen, when I was in it-classic Van Halen-makes you wanna drink, dance and screw, right? And the new Van Halen encourages you to drink milk, drive a Nissan and have a relationship.' - David Lee Roth.
