Default Football union chief Gene Upshaw dies at 63

    - Aug 21 2008 09:30AM EDT | AP
By DAVE GOLDBERG - AP Football Writer
Gene Upshaw, the Hall of Fame guard who as union head helped get NFL players free agency and the riches that came with it, has died. He was 63.

Upshaw's death was announced by the NFL Players Association, which he headed for a quarter century.

His outstanding 15-season playing career was entirely with the Oakland Raiders and included two Super Bowl wins and seven Pro Bowl appearances. Upshaw's biography was posted on the front page of the Hall of Fame Web site Thursday along with his enshrinement speech from 1987.

In 1983, he became executive director of the players' association and guided it through the 1987 strike that led to replacement football. By 1989, the players had a limited form of freedom, called Plan B, and in 1993, free agency and a salary cap were instituted.

Since then, the players have prospered so much that NFL owners recently opted out of the latest labor contract, which was negotiated two years ago by Upshaw and then-commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

Upshaw was criticized by some for not being tough enough in negotiations with Tagliabue, a close friend of the union head. He also was blamed by many older veterans for not dealing sufficiently with their health concerns.

But the salary cap for this season is $116 million and the players are making close to 60 percent of the 32 teams' total revenues, as specified in the 2006 agreement. In all, the players will be paid $4.5 billion this year, according to owners.

    RIP Gene.

It'll be interesting to see who is chosen to run the union. Especially with the NFL looking to pounce on getting another week added to the season.

Gene came down to Carmel often. John Madden has a home here and I guess they hung out together.

He's was a HUGE man. Greatest OT that ever played, if you ever look at the Super Bowl XI footage you'll see that Stabler had enough time to find a receiver AND send out for pizza.

    Great man.

I met Gene when I was like 10 years old. My Dad was acquainted with him somehow. Neat guy. I remember him shaking my arm with his hand.

Gene tore UP a bar one time with Dad. Small little hick town in Oregon and my Dad takes him to a tavern....real bright. A couple necks were just drunk enough to tell Gene "We don't serve no neegers in here" (this was like 1980 or 82 or something). Gene turned that little dive upside down and didn't break a sweat. Nice guy, but certainly not one to use the N word on. (duh)

    RIP Gene

    Look at is this way.

Under Upshaw, the NLFPA went on strike twice and got their asses handed to them. The NFL owners had become too powerful so he learned to negotiate better. Unlike many other unions the NFL's players make more on average today (adjusted with inflation) than they ever have. Unlike Baseball and Basketball, the NFLPA works with the NFL to make sure it's players aren't on drugs or steroids. Yes, new steroids (BALCO) will slip by but over-all the NFL is also the healthiest it has been in years.

Considering the beating that unions of all kinds took in the 1980s and 1990s the NFLPA has done alright by it's members.

And, even right this instant he's still better than any O lineman the Raiders are going into the season with.

Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.
Michael did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.
