Default anybody here experienced with PAF's

Looking to replace my pickups(Gibson V 67 RI) with PAFish type pickups. Crome covers installed. Im looking real hard at the New DiMarzio 36th Aniversary pups. Im just looking for a traditional classic blues and rock sound but the choices are endless! If anybody has any opinions id like to hear them.

a good place to start is with a set of burstbuckers, they are pretty awsome. also theres a set from bareknuckle (the peter green ones i forget what they are called) i've heard GREAT stuff about them, they used peter greens les paul (which was owned by gary moore) as the model for them, they have the out of phase sound etc.
or you can go with something like a s.d. pearly gates which i highly recomend, i have fitted them to several of my guitars.

One question. How much are you willing to spend on a set?

Iv'e been using the good 'ol Seymour Duncan '59, and it sounds great in my Kramer necked strat. It depends how "real PAF" you wan't to go. the closest thing to a real PAF can actually be quite dissapointing to some people. I had a friend many years ago who was also a huge VH fanatic, and a shop we used to frequent used to get alot of pickups in exchange ( we're talking around '86 or '87,) and they had a couple of PAF's. My buddy new Ed used 'em so he bought one for at that time around $350.00 (what are they now $1.700 for a grungy one). He hated the sound! He thought it was going to be the holy grail and give him that perfect distorted tone. It did'nt. The pickup was in great shape, but compared to todays units which we're all used to, they sound quite weak in comparison. Besides, Eddie rewound these pickups with more windings to get more driving the preamp of his Marshall. Duncan does make a pickup even closer to the original, I believe it's called the Seth Lover, after the creator of the humbucker. Have not tried it but it is as close to the real thing as you can get.

Unfortunately bro, that's what your gonna pay for a custom pup.
Thats what I pay each and every time I make a custom guitar..
SD SH 14 Custom 5 might be a nice choice though.

......I used to have some diMarzio PAF's in an old 77BFP Jem - I always thought they were very weak - I wouldn't go for them again.

To my ears (and through a fairly simple rig) Seymour Duncans always seem to be more ballsy than DiMarzios (although in my MMan Morse and MMan EVH I've left the stock DiMarzios in and they sound good........although I haven't A/B'd them with other pickups in the same guitar as yet).

Isn't the Seymour Duncan Custom Custom supposed to be a copy of Eds 5150 pick up? I've always heard great things about that but never actually tried then - and the cost ain't massive from what I recall..........
Ed: Actually, the last record I bought was by a band called Brand X
Al: I make my living by viciously attacking something
    Mike: ...actually I don't drink.
    Sammy: Are these yours Eddie?
Dave: Look at that ankle - dirty girl!

I think it was Joe Bosso from Guitar World who was with Eddie when he was working on his 5150 just before an interview back in '88, and he spied that the 5150 pickup was a Seymour Duncan '59. I'd read this from some interview with Dennis Berardi (then Kramer president and once friend of Ed's)years before when Ed used to slap his guitar together there. Even Ed said he was'nt sure, but thought it was either a JB or a '59. The JB has a little more distortion. I use 59's in some of my guitars, because I like being able to roll off into clean tones. The JB's roll off but still have quite a bit of dirt. Paf's roll off clean too.

Heh, massive difference between the '59 and the JB. My gosh. Not to mention the Custom Custom.

Anyway, just try the DiMarzio anniversary pickup.
