Default Russell Crowe to play Bill Hicks

This could be interesting. I think Crowe would do a good job playing Hicks.

Russell Crowe to Play Bill Hicks?
Source: Flicks News August 18, 2008

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Russell Crowe may next play comedian Bill Hicks now that Ridley Scott's Nottingham has been pushed back. Here's a clip:

"I have another project based on the life of comedian Bill Hicks, which is going from treatment to draft stage with Kiwi writer Mark Staufer."

It is understood he is considering playing the main role of Hicks — a controversial and brilliant American comedian who battled drug and alcohol abuse before dying from cancer at 32. Crowe confirmed Nottingham would not go ahead until March next year because director Sir Ridley Scott wanted the leaves on the trees in England's Sherwood Forest to be the right colour.

Slightly off-topic, but I keep wondering when the VH Links' member "Russell Crowe" will make a first post; been registered over a year? Block Pool anyone?

I've watched some of Bill Hicks stuff on YouTube, and found him to be completely unfunny, so I take it that this will be a drama.

Funny. Usually when a biopic is announced about someone I actually admire I always think the actor is a bad choice but I could see Crowe doing a very good job.

He'll obviously nail the physical and the violent anger. If he can get Bill's timing, this might be a very interesting film.

His life will make a great story. Having guns drawn on him. His drinking troubles. Wanting to be a rock star and his infamous meltdown on a Chicago stage. Has all the makings of something very juicy.

I also think it could finally elevate Hicks from major cult status to being a household name. As my sig suggests, I rank him right up there, only matched by George Carlin, though they are pretty different animals when you get past the initial delivery.

    Too true.

For those who have only seen youtube clips, it often misses the rhythm of his delivery and the connections he builds up between subject matter when you only have bits of shows.

Here's the complete "One night stand" from Chicago. 30 minutes of pure genius.

On the same website is his "revelations" concert from the UK, where he was probably more popular than in the US. Another full show, this one over an hour.

Bill died in his early 30's. I like Crowe as much as anyone but WOW. He's a touch old to play Bill Hicks.

I dont think Crowe is the right choice either....

I was at that infamous Letterman show when they censored Hicks.

He was a true genius. if you listen to some of his stuff it's eerie how it completely fits in with what's going on in the world today. except back then he was talking about Bush I and Debbie Gibson instead of Bush II and Britney Spears.
