Did you ever wonder what the Frankenstrat would have looked like if Ed had kept its original styling? I have heard interviews where Ed stated that he always kinda liked the plain black and white look of the guitar in its early stages better.

And that was the basis of this guitar. I am building (and 5150 Frankenstrat is helping) a frankenstrat replica that is supposed to look identical to the real one at Ed's house -- but with no red paint, and the original pickgaurd (so the original styling that Ed seems to really like is kept). We are still going to put a Floyd Rose on it, the quarter, and all of the years of damage that came after the red paint.

This is basically a replica of a guitar that does not exist -- but at least we can now begin to answer our question; what would the Frankenstrat look like right now if Ed never painted it red?

We are going to put a 22 fret strat-ish style neck on this; mrj has one on one of his guitars and it has an amazing feel! I'm so excited for this project, that i can't wait until it is finished!

Well, since every neck Ed added to the guitar besides the original was a 22 fret neck, we figured that a fender-ish style 22 fret neck wouldn't look out of place.

Very true. Ron -- I hope you don't mind, but we used a picture of your recent Frankenstein replica as a guide to relic ours, since we couldn't see EVERY angle from the pictures I have of the real thing. I figured you did your homework, so we went off of yours instead of the Fender replica where we couldn't tell what damage was actually on the frankenstein.

Coming from you and Scott, these comments are really appreciated! You guys both have made amazing stuff that I have drooled over at some point in time.

That is really great, man. I LOVE the idea.

I have a bit of a soft spot for Frankie 1 because I built one for a friend of mine a couple of years ago. This is gonna look awesome!

How are you going to age the pickguard? Just scratch it up, or will you have to do something else?

Good luck and please post more pics as the project matures.

Awesome job! It's basically aged like it is with the red... but without the red. I think the Tele healed neck like is on it now would be a natural evolution thinking that every change the guitar has gone through would have still occured even if he didn't add the red.

Sweet. I figured you probably had pictures of the areas of the original that I couldn't see -- so by using yours for reference, I knew it would be close to the real thing.
I still have some relicing to do, but I was happy with how the first stage turned out. I did it all with a utility knife, sandpaper, my driveway, and a really big and nasty file that my great-grandfather used for woodworking. That thing was key -- every where I touched the guitar with it, the resulting damage looked really natural and horrible.

Does anyone have an acurate tracing or drawing of the original frankenstrat pickguard? I know I will have to melt away part of it to fit the floyd rose and the 22 fret neck heal, but I figure that is what Ed would have done had he chosen to keep the guitar's original styling and leave it on.

Thanks for all the comments everybody!

What you can do is trace a Strat guard.
    Its REAL close.

You may have to resize it.
Dont forget the melted part from the hot pot layin on it.
