Sex offender gets community youth sports award

Torrington, CT (AP) -- Members of a Torrington baseball umpires' organization are defending the lifetime achievement award they have presented to a convicted child sex offender.

Fifty-eighty-year-old Tom Barbero received the award earlier this month from the Torrington Board of Approved Baseball Umpires. He umpired for the association at area baseball games from 1970 to 1998.

Board members say they knew about Barbero's criminal record and chose to honor him because his service and work as an umpire deserved recognition.

Barbero was sentenced in 2000 to four years in prison followed by 35 years probation. Police accused Barbero of sexually assaulting three teenage boys in 1994 and 1995, but say the boys were not involved with youth baseball teams.

Barbero was an umpire in the Babe Ruth league, which includes players from 13 to 15 years old.

Wow, sounds like he could also be in line for a "Jackson Family Honor."

I am sorry guys, Rant warning!! there are few things I feel strongly about this subject is one of them, So buckle up.

Ct does not take these offenders seriously. they are at 2 years behind in all law. How does this creepo slip through the cracks and work with kids. they have to be tracked for the rest of their lives. Ct is very weak in enforcement. right now they are finally passing a bill to keep these assholes away from places where children congregate. this always pisses me off when I hear stuff like this. When I lived in Boston, that law was passed 9 years ago long with other States. Ct has dragged its ass on passing protection laws for our Children. This state is still one of the states that still allows passengers in a car to be able to drink booze while in transit. So it encourages people to drink and drive still. So there is more drunks driving here than what I saw in MA. But MA still has more Massholes. But hearing this shocked me. Most states thats considered this as public drinking and open container. Its is against the law. The one law they have passed that shocks me is the no smoking in restaurants. its a good law, but Smoking is less dangerous than Child Molesters and Drunks on the road. This State has it priorities all wrong. I love Ct don't get me wrong. But they really have to get on the wagon and protect its citizens. When politicians are this incompetent. The Feds should step in and pass it as our nations law. No room for individual States to screw it up with loopholes and weak enforcement. And none enforcement itself is criminal. Any person or State that is not willing to turn the screws on these pieces of garbage are not worthy of leading us as a nation and themselves criminal in the eyes of humanity. Our Families need to be protected.
Some will argue that its unfair to the molesters. ?????!!!!! WTF!! Whos fucking side are you on? There are no Shades of gray in this area. It is black and white. If you can not comprehend that this is wrong, there is no room in our society for you.

It is illegal in Connecticut for someone operating a motor vehicle on a public highway, in a parking lot for 10 or more cars, on certain other classes of roads, or on school property to drink any amount of alcohol. It is legal for any vehicle occupant other than the driver to possess or consume an alcoholic beverage in a vehicle. A driver found consuming alcohol may be fined up to $ 500, imprisoned for up to three months, or both.

    Thanks for digging that up.

In Mass if the passengers are drinking, the driver will be fined and could lose their license. and the passenger can and will be arrested. There is nothing better than a drunk moron thinking its a great Idea to toss full beer cars at other cars on the highway. The driver is liable for their actions in the car. I seen this happen a few times here. thats something I am not used to and don't care for. I lost a good friend 4 years ago to a drunk driver. I have a zero tolerance towards it. Its all fun and games until you kill someone. another growing problem is cell phones while driving. I know that in Ct it is illegal. I still see people doing it. Again weak enforcement. How many people have to die before this state gets off their asses to do something about it.
one more example, One of the casinos over here would lose 2 workers a month, they died because of a lack of side walks. and forget about it if your handicapped or wheelchair bound. they all have to walk along the road to get to work or go to the store.I pisses me off to see elderly people in wheel chairs fight with traffic. many have been struck and killed. I worried about them.I have gotten out of the car to help out on many occasions. this went on since it opened 9 years ago. it took them 9 years to put in freakin sidewalks.

    Umpire stripped of service award
    By TRACY KENNEDY

TORRINGTON - The Torrington Board of Baseball Umpires decided late Monday night that Tom Barbero, a long-time umpire and convicted pedophile, must give back a service award presented to him two weeks ago at the umpire's banquet.

Barbero, 58, of Torrington, umpired for the association at area baseball games from 1970 until 1998. He reportedly sexually assaulted three teenage boys in 1994 and 1995. The victims were not involved in youth baseball teams, but it signalled the end of Barbero's umpiring career.

In June 2000, Barbero was convicted of second-degree sexual assault with a victim between the ages of 13 and 15 years old and two counts of risk of injury to a minor. He was sentenced to serve four years of a 10-year sentence and ordered to serve 35 years probation, according to court records. He has registered as a sex offender with the Department of Public Safety for nearly a decade. Before his conviction, Barbero resigned his position as zoning enforcement officer for the City of Torrington.

Barbero was called late Monday but could not be reached for comment.
Days after the award banquet, members of the board defended their decision to award Barbero despite his felony conviction, citing Barbero's long-standing record of service and dedication to the job. In a recent Register Citizen Internet poll, 82.8 percent of the 64 readers who participated said Barbero should not have received an award.

Following a meeting held in Torrington Monday night, the umpires' board voted that to "rescind the recognition award" given to Barbero, according to a statement issued at 11:20 p.m. Monday and signed by its secretary, Peter Battistoni.

"The Torrington Board of Umpires is dedicated to the communities and schools they service and are committed to ensuring that they provide a safe, healthy and enjoyable environment both on and off the baseball diamond. The membership recognizes the importance of a comprehensive review of its award recipients regarding future candidates," according to the statement.
Battistoni would not say where the board met or how many members voted to rescind Barbero's award.

"I was told not to comment," Battistoni said. He would not say if Barbero must return the plaque given to him at the banquet.

President Lou Fracasso could not be reached for comment. Member R.J. Poniatoski was called, but declined to comment.
Tracy Kennedy can be reached by e-mail at courts@registercitizen.com.
