Default The Beach Boys: the Official Thread

While reading another thread in which is was argued that the Beach Boys were more dysfunctional than Van Halen, I realized there is no official Beach Boys thread. This, to me, is a crime.

Well, now there is an official Beach Boys thread, so let's begin!

Being the youngest of a music-loving family, I was surrounded by lots of good tunes while I was growing up. I remember Endless Summer in the 8-track and on the turntable when I was young. For some reason, somewhere along the way, the Beach Bums were relegated to oldies status and prime purveyors of wimp rock.

One day in the winter of my junior year of high school, I heard "Wouldn't It Be Nice" on a radio station and I was actually impressed. Wistful teenage love lyrics, a great bass line, a rockin' accordion...my DAD plays accordion! Who would have thought accordions would be a part of a rock classic?!? Next time I got the chance, I went to the local music store and bought ALL the Beach Boys they had (Endless Summer, Pet Sounds, and some $2.99 tape I found in the discount rack).

Endless Summer had some great songs ("The Warmth Of The Sun", "Don't Worry Baby", "I Get Around") but Pet Sounds was indescribable. I actually blame this album for making me fall in love with someone. Pet Sounds convinced me that Brian Wilson was a genius; the only problem with him was all those goofy surf songs he wrote. I'm glad I eventually discovered that there was life for the Beach Boys AFTER Pet Sounds because I would have missed some good music and I would still think the Beach Boys are weaker than Coors Light.

And, yes, I eventually came to love those hokey surf songs.

First band I ever saw live. Great time. Dennis was trashed as usual. Brian was on another planet but his genius speaks for itself. Carl was solid. Mike was good but pretty goofy. They cranked out one hit after another.

I don't know where to put the Beach Boys. On the one hand, I really do enjoy the music - I mean, how can you listen to "Fun Fun Fun" or "I Get Around" or "California Girls" or "Good Vibrations" and not smile? And "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is just a beautiful piece of music. But on the other hand, I'm not a fan of what they became. I suppose it's no different than the Beatles that in the late '60s they became a studio band, but unlike the Beatles, they actually became two bands - the studio band that was creating the music that Mike, Carl and the rest would come in and sing over, and the touring band of Mike, Carl, Dennis, Al & Bruce that would have to take the music on the road (and I've not heard any live recordings so I'm not sure how they were able to pull off some of Brian's intricate arrangements live). I don't know - the internet has spoiled the way I think about music in some cases - I mean, the Beach Boys didn't hide the fact that the original band wasn't always the ones making the music on those later albums (unlike, say, KISS), but still, I'm not sure it's something I would've been aware of as I mostly was only familiar with their songs from the radio (and the Greatest Hits album I have bought since doesn't get into detail with the various tracks). So what I'm trying to say is, now I can't listen to "California Girls" or "Wouldn't It Be Nice" without thinking about how the guys that I consider the Beach Boys have little involvement with the music on those tracks.

Why should this forum care about the Beach Boys?

Why? For one thing, they were an American band that actually held their own and at times surpassed the all encompassing, world dominating Beatles in terms of record sales. In fact their groundbreaking "Pet Sounds" lp inspired The Beatles to record "Sgt. Pepper". Their use of harmony has been copied by countless artists to this very day. They have composed some of the sunniest and most beautiful music ever offered by a supposed rock and roll band.

And on top of that, David Lee Roth chose to cover one of their tunes and had a solo hit with it.

    Does that answer your question?

There's The Beach Boys and there's Brian Wilson. I totally dig the Pet Sounds and Smile era. I saw Brian Wilson in DC in 2006 on the Pet Sounds 40th anniversary tour - played Pet Sounds start to finish.

I have two album covers framed in my home recording studio - Fair Warning and Pet Sounds. And yes, Brian Wilson is god.

Well, it's the Non-Van Halen Music Only forum, and the Beach Boys are non-Van Halen and they created music, so they seem to fit the bill.

...and there's craig's answer as well!

Man, I wish I could sing like Carl Wilson.

EDIT: I guess I should have played the clip first. That actually sounds like Brian singing it.

Still, the standard version with Carl singing it is one of my favorite vocal performances of all time.

Frank Sinatra once said that "Something" by the Beatles was the greatest love song ever written. I would respectfully disagree with the Chairman. It's God Only Knows.
