    Default I Want a Minivan

Oh dear lord, what has become of me?

I'm so terribly tempted. The allure of the minivan is calling to me. What allure, you say? I'm tired of trying to wedge too much stuff into my SUV. It's getting old, and I'm wanting something different. Bigger SUVs are nice, but none of them offer the flexibility of a minivan.

It makes sense, but... I told the ladies in the office today, and they laughed at me. "You'll look like a soccer mommy!" My best friend laughed at me. "Oh, the chicks are gonna love that!"

I'm going to look at a 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT on Monday afternoon. 22,000 miles, listed at a hair less than $12,000. I thought about new, but I'd end up making payments. I haven't done that in a long time, and the idea of just buying outright is nice. I really like the Stow N' Go seats. I end up hauling around computers for work, lots of camping stuff, and some large model airplanes. It'd work really well for all of that.

But damn... The idea makes me feel old.

Get over the stigma and get what you want, you big pussy. Aren't you old enough yet to start not caring what others think?

For your lifestyle the Sto n' go might just be a good enough fit to get you in that dodge. From a caravan owner, just know that it's not a long term love affair. The older ones had tranny problems, but it was fixed by 06. It's been pretty common for a lot of maintenance to come up after about 75k. Seals (rear) and water pumps are what I hear about.

I've seen it over and over in reviews, people wishing they'd spend the extra scratch for either one of the three (I'm sure you can guess): 1- Honda, 2- Toyota, and 3- Nissan. We went with the Quest and LOVE IT (but you wouldn't like the seats).

You'll probably land on that dodge, but check out the VW (the newer vans, not the toureg). They open up very uniquely with a shitload of room with access from the side doors (sliders). I think you might actually like that more.

Good Lord, do not buy a Eurovan!!!

If you're gonna buy a Minivan and give up your manhood (sorry, had to throw that line out, I think you'll understand), buy the Dodge. They are actually built pretty good and the newer ones don't have many problems. Plus, it's domestic so you should be able to get it for a reasonable price... I hate to say it but the Honda is pretty good as well... The only drawback is the Honda is Japanese which means it holds it value... I used to work in the car business so I had to know shit like this...

There are several issues with going with the Eurovan...

They are expensive to work on and like most VW's, they have a decent amount of electrical problems.

The other thing is there is not a hell of a lot of them around so that makes it even worse.

BTW, I just checked some auction reports and 12 grand for an '06 SXT is a pretty fair buy... Unless the dealer took it in on trade and just ripped it, they don't have that much profit in it... I'd still try to hammer on them though...

Actually... To think outside the box for a second... I know it would be a lot more money but I'd look into getting a Dodge Sprinter if you want a van. They have passenger versions if ya need to haul people around. They have a MB diesel in them so they actually get decent mileage plus they are actually built by Freightliner and are designed to have the shit beat out of them. You also could support seenbad's local economy since Freightliner is based in his neck of the woods...

I am so anti-SUV, but I think we're going to need to get one. Just getting too hard with the car and a 3 1/2 year old. I was thinking of trading my wife's Lexus ES 300 for a used RX 330. We had one as a rental car when ours was being fixed, and it was pretty freaking nice. I'll probably have to make payments, but her car is still worth about $10k so maybe not too much.

My wife wants a Honda Odyssey, but I just think they're big clunkers.

I could never bring myself to get a minivan but I must admit that my girlfriend had one and it was way more roomy than my SUV. It really made me rethink my decision. They make them with so many options for hauling things with shifting the seating, etc, they have come a long way from where they started.

As far as your manhood, don't buy into the stigma. Buy what gets the job done. Would you buy a sledge hammer when all you need is a claw hammer just because it would be more manly?

We've had a 2002 Caravan for a couple of years now. First Minivan, and we've been pretty happy with it. The family vehicle before that was a Durango (which I still drive).

With three kids, the minivan is easier for the kids to load/unload than most SUV's. And the bump in gas mileage was nice, as well (around 22 on trips). It's fairly easy to pull the seats out for hauling stuff.

We've had no mechanical problems so far (65K miles). Looks like I'll need to be on the lookout for tranny problems in about 10k. We had to have the Durango tranny rebuilt at 100k.

I'm of the age where I don't care what people think about what I drive. Then again, I wear sandals with socks, so what do I know?

No way will we ever own a minivan. My wife has a 2008 Tahoe and we love it.

However, the T&Cs do look like they have a lot of cool options in them.

anybody ever listen to John Boy & Billy???

    "Married Man, Married Man,
    Drives around in a mini-van
Got a wife and some kids
His whole life's on the skids
Hey man, there goes the Married Man!

there's more but I can't remember the lyrics.....

I am such an SUV snob that I could never imagine driving a mini van - I have lots of girl friends though and they mostly drive them. I'd say the Honda, Toyota are the most common here.

When I ride with them I feel like I'm gettin ready to be ejected out of the front windshield. I admit they are nice for the seating, storage all that.... but we have a boat, go snow skiing in an area that requires 4wheel drive and have a horse that needs to be hauled around occasionally .... thankfully, I don't need an excuse NOT to have one right now.

    Good luck!

We've got a Caravan and it's been pretty reliable. Last weekend it cost me $750.00 to fix the A/C, but otherwise there's been no problems in the five years we've had it.
