Rocky Horror Remake Slammed By Creator

    14 August 2008 5:01 AM, PDT

A remake of cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show has been slammed by its creator Richard O'Brien.

The original 1975 film, starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Meat Loaf, was a cult hit for O'Brien and MTV bosses are keen to replicate its success.

But the Brit won't be involved - and is not happy the remake is going ahead without him.

He says, "I have no view on whether it should be remade but it doesn't have my blessing.

"I'm not co-producing it and I won't be involved in any way. The first I heard about it was when people sent me cuttings from U.S. papers."

Agreed. It was the crowd of people going to the Midnight showing of Rocky Horror that made the experience. I remember rice, water pistols and toilet paper, but the official fan site makes it look like the list has grown over the years, to the point where one would need to bring a backpack with themselves in order to get all the stuff in the theatre.

horrible idea.. it should be left alone.

You want to cash in on the name, clean up the audio and video and re-release it, and get as much merchandising cash as possible.

    Au contraire, mon frere.

But it's a bit that either takes or it don't, that's for sure.

I have had some good times before, during, and after midnight Rocky Horror showings. Damn good times. I can cite that movie verbatim, and yeah, I know all the audience vocal participation parts as well as appropriate props to bring for commensurate scenes (which increased to vaudevillian melodrama levels as years went by).

LOL. Rocky Horror. It's been a while.

Ridiculous, making cult film remakes. It'll tank. MTV is high.

Hey, it's MTV, hence the suckage.

    Dumb dumb dumb dumb.

Why re-make a movie that nobody saw when it first came out and only became popular durring midnight showings in college towns and so on?

Also, it's not all that shocking or provocative in 2008. Hell, today the Rocky Horror Picture Show is just Project Runway without the singing.

I'm not opposed to remakes in principle, so long as they bring something fresh to the source material. There have been some decent movies over the years as a result, but I really can't see a point to this.

What's particularly frustrating is there are so many talented people out there with original ideas just dying for a chance to make a movie. They get ignored while Hollywood recycles its own leftovers. Sad.

Saw this at a midnight showing a couple months ago, and I did not see the big deal.

Then again, I was completely sober.
