    Default Iggy Pop vs Dave

I went to see Iggy Pop & The Stooges last night in NYC. One of the first things i said when i left the show was "That's how I wished Dave was when I saw VH on this tour."

Whether you like iggy's music or not -the second he hit the stage he was running around, diving into the crowd, just non-stop for close to 2 hours. And he's like 62!

Now i know Dave would never dive into the crowd but what happened to the Dave that used to be running around the stage, etc? I've seen him thru the years and remember him that way.

This tour I think he spent 90% of his time just strolling around, snapping his fingers. he's not outta shape. He could be darting around the stage like he used to. Shit if Iggy can do it at 62, Dave can.....

    What happened?

Yep, I hear ya. There has been a lot of talk about this. Everyone was basically pleased with this tour. But I know many were hoping he could rekindle that old energy and really put on a show similar to years ago. We got great vocals, I know people were just really hoping for the physical side to come back as well. And his quote at the press conference that yes, Van Halen music has always been physical music and how that's as part of the show as the singing got peoples hopes up a little.

But I know his knees aren't what they use to be, and those are the basis for movement and stability. I'm betting if he had fresh knees he would have been all over the place and doing splits and everything. But I'm sure his already operated on once knee it's as strong as it use to be. Considering this, I think he did great with his spinning kicks.

But yes, it would be very interesting to me to hear him talk about this part of his act now days, in effect a behind the scenes of why he does or doesn't do some of the more physical things he used to do which were so much a part of what made him basically a legendary frontman.

The Van Halen family probably didn't want Dave stealing the spotlight from them

It's a damned if you do damned if you don't thing.

Overall, most people make fun of mothers who dress like their daughters as being pathetic and hollow for not being able to accept their age. But some people say "that's great, keep that youthful spirit grandma!"

I side with how Dave played it. Plus, I don't think he had a choice, he was told how to play it.

Been a fan of Mr Osterberg a long time before anyone knew who the hell he was. But Dave and Iggy are two different creatures IMO. I had friends who loved early VH back around 77 and couldnt handle Iggy he was a trailblazer for Punk ..Dave was never Punk lol. But I could never understand Iggys relationship with Bowie. Bowie realized his song writing ability...ie China Doll. Iggy did have an influence on Bowie to go from Glam to more of a punk guy.

I agree! I saw the Stooges last August and was floored by the energy Iggy had at his age. By "Down on the Street," he was humping the amps. He did stage dive, ran around far more than Dave, sang all the words, and most unpleasing to the eyes--he got naked.

Stooges put on a great show, I'd definitely go see them again.

    this was my point.

it wasnt to compare Iggy to Dave in their chosen music genres. but it just knocked me out that at 62 Iggy's still able to run around, sweat outta his mind and physically put on an unbelievable show (and sing all the words). Whereas Dave - ok mostly skipped a lotta words in the day- but could dart from stage left to right in mere seconds etc. I'm not looking for those splits off the drum riser anymore but that strolling around and snapping the fingers bit he does now really bugged me....

there's a youtube video someone posted in another thread from I think a show in atlanta (?) anyway it's of you really got me/i'm the one from the 2007-2008 tour and there's this moment where Dave & Ed sorta meet and Ed's doing that thing he does where he shifts his feet back n forth to sorta "slide" across the stage (he's been doing it forever - you know what it is even if i cant describe it that good).... anyway dave is there lookin' at him and literally looks like he doesnt know how to interact with what Ed's doing. Almost like he doesn't even know how to Dance! Dave! Not knowing how to dance! What he does looks like some dude who was pulled on the dance floor at a wedding by his girl and tries to make some quick moves that he knows deep down won't embarrass himself before he go sit back down.

It just screams "What happened to David Lee Roth?" or "who told him not to do anything on stage?"

i dunno. i know a lotta people disagree with me, but that's my 2 cents i guess.

From what I have seen in videos and bootlegs...in the 80s Dave looked like he was out to prove something on stage.

You constantly would see him doing his kicks and shaking and jumping and running across that stage.

It also looked like he would interact a bit more with "certain" genders in the audience or not so much interact as he would be teasing them.

Now fast forward to this tour...it constantly looks like Dave is saying to himself, " Yeah....I'm back....and now it's time for these people to bow to me

The way he strutted on stage...he rarely jumped around. He just kind of looked like he was even more full of himself than he already is.

That's not a bad thing mind you. It's kind of cool to see a confident lead singer on stage in today's rock scene. But it definitely is a change.

I saw CVH waaayy back in 1978 and between Dave and Ed, I didn't know what the fluck hit me, didn't know where the heck to look - was in complete awe. Dave was non-stop, all over the place and completely amazing. Alright he's older now, so am I...but I really missed the energy. Wasn't expecting the Dave of VH past, but definately a little bit more would have been nice.

Maybe running around too much on stage doesn't allow Dave to maximize his vocal ability.
