Default Most Overrated Van Halen Album

This should be fun and raise some controversy!

    My vote goes to "Balance".

This is sonically a stong album. The production is top notch, much like "Fair Warning". That is, unfortunately, where the similarities end. Let's look at "Balance" track by track.

"The Seventh Seal" - Decent music and lyrics. The music reminds me too much of "Poundcake", which is a better song.

"Can't Stop Loving You" - Sounds like an obvious attempt to write a hit single. This doesn't mean it's a bad song, it's just not one of my favorites. The lyrics are very "See Spot run" in nature.

"Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)" - I just never dug this one. The opening riff seems kind of weak for the great Eddie Van Halen. I like the solo part. I just don't like the general absence of melody and harmony in the music and lyrics.

"Amsterdam" - This is one of my favorite tracks on the album. Good riff and music. I don't mind the drug references in the lyrics, since I'm not Dutch like the VH Brothers.

"Big Fat Money" - It's o.k. Not great. Not terrible.

"Strung Out" - Is this Eddie's "Revolution 9"? What was he thinking? Yikes.

"Not Enough" - Much better lyrically than some of Sammy's other "love songs", but the whole vibe is a little too morose and melancholy. The music reminds me of "Sister Christian".

"Aftershock" - My favorite track on the album. Killer beginning, breakdown and solo. A strong song.

"Doin' Time" - Decent drum solo by Alex. Much better instrumental than the abysmal "Strung Out".

"Baluchiterium" - Killer instrumental. Eddie is great on this one.

"Take Me Back (Deja Vu)" - I really like the opening riff, but then the song just goes nowhere. I hate the chorus. This song could have and should have been much better.

"Feelin'" - I just don't get this one at all. The whole thing seems extremely forced and contrived. "I need a change, I need it quick, before it makes me sick". WTF? Not a good way to wrap up the Hagar-era.

    Let the games begin!

    Who's next?
"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving is not for you"

"Be careful what you wish for because you just might lose what you already have"

"Women and Children First ... The REAL Van Halen III"

I would of thought Balance was the most underrated album, since it wasn't that much of a success.

I like Balance. I think Sam mailed it in a little bit on that one though. Just my opinion, but the lyrics to Amsterdam and saying he couldn't come up with lyrics to Baluchiterium (sp? too lazy to look it up) just shows he wasn't trying his best.

The good songs on it are just excellent and they make up for the throwaway tracks like CSLY, Doin' Time and Strung Out.

I don't know about over rated, as with everyone it is different, but besides VHIII the album that gets the least amount of turns on the iPod is OU812.

Production levels are not that good and it has some of my absolute least favorite VH songs on it, and the good songs are not that great. My personal VH mix has ZERO songs from OU812 on it, and it even has one from VHIII. Mine All Mine and Cabo Wabo are great tunes to me, the rest, ehh.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

I honestly don't think any of them have been overrated. How could they be? The classic 6 are all as good as advertised and a couple never actually got the widespread praise that I believe they should have (WACF and Fair Warning in particular.)

In the Sammy era, they hit the scene strong with 5150 and backed it up with chart hits and a huge tour. There's no denying that 1986 was probably the second best year of this bands career behind 1984.

From there, I don't think many people outside of VH fans know very much about OU812 or Balance. And FUCK was a huge success with bonafide hits and another smokin' tour.

And Van Halen 3, well....the word "overrated" shouldn't even be within 1,000 miles of this album.

So no, I can't even associate "overrated" with any of the VH albums.

VH with Sam ('86-'96) - Incredible era....."We have renamed this town 'New Halen!'.
VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

Well written and I quite agree.

As for III, it shouldn't "rate" at all.

I am not a huge fan of FUCK. Besides 3 songs, seems like the rest is fluff. I can't stand Spanked. After FUCK I would say Diver Down. BUT I love em all for varying reasons.

    Balance?

This is an easy query. The two most overrated albums in VH's entire catalogue are by a country mile, 1984 and FUCK.

Plastic pieces of pop slicked and licked, each having a few standout signature tracks that largely, even greatly, differ from the rest of the mostly standard or subpar stuff on each LP.

IMO 1984 is not overrated since it has Eddie's best lead work and Alex has a great sound to the album as well. While some of the songs have been overplayed, there are still deep cuts like Drop Dead Legs and Girl Gone Bad that don't get old.

I do agree with FUCK though.

Fair Warning is Ed's best lead, rhythm, and composition work.

    And you oughta know that.

'84's not just about over exposure. It's about the heavy pop transition, and the lackluster efforts on Dave's part as opposed to previous lyrical efforts.

Personally, I think DDL gets a lot of accolades from the diehard fanbase, but doesn't warrant it. Nobody ever cites TJ as an exceptional track, we all know it sucks that Jump is largely what Van Halen, outside of us, is known for, I'll Wait sucks. HOP is good but has always felt like a throwaway at the end of the disk.

HFT, despite being an MTV darling, still kicks, though, and yes, Girl Gone Bad is one of the excellent exceptions on the LP.

VS, i can't quite understand u on this one. FUCK? "Pleasure Dome," "TOTW," "Dream Is Over," "Poundcake," "Runaround," "Judgment Day" (for the solo) - u got at least 6 great tracks. "Man on a Mission", "In and Out" and "Spanked" are kind of on the lame side, but u still have a lot of great tracks. "Right Now" is ok.

1984, I also can't agree. Overplayed is not the same as overrated. I'd say Diver Down and OU812 are the weakest links.

I fall in line with Squalen about FUCK. Judgement is just an ass kicker, Poundcake, Top of the World. Great tracks.

Right Now, eh, ok. Dream is Over is ok.

Man On a Mission, Spanked (dear Lord help us), In N' Out, boo, boo and boo.

And I don't think I have ever made it all the way through Pleasure Dome. I can appreciate what they were trying to do, but I always skip it nowadays.

It's amazing that DD has sold almost as many copies as WACF and FW combined.

    1984

"Balance" is one of my favorite VH albums, Dave or Sam. Great dark record, in the FW vein. IMO that was the best Ed every played. His songwriting then was great, his lead playing was great, Ed way on top of his game.

This hallway in the Links house of cards is making me dizzy.

1984 is the most overrated album with the most underrated song that is the most favorite, yet least liked.
