EVH collection destroyed in San Diego fire.

Was bored and Googling, and thought this was kinda interesting...Perhaps Eddie would be willing to help a fan out...

    JOHN GASTALDO / Union-Tribune
No one has a cure for the pain of snail-paced rebuilding after the destruction of last October's wildfires, but residents of Rancho Bernardo thought a dose of rock 'n' roll and a field of flags memorializing each home that burned might help.

No one has a cure for the pain of snail-paced rebuilding after the destruction of last October's wildfires, but residents of Rancho Bernardo thought a dose of rock 'n' roll and a field of flags memorializing each home that burned might help.

Rancho Bernardo took the brunt of the Witch Creek and Guejito fires, losing 365 homes. Almost 20 percent of the homeowners have said they cannot rebuild because they are seriously underinsured, said Valerie Brown, project coordinator for RB United, a community organization that operates one of the county's long-term fire recovery centers.

“For the general public, it's all gone,” Brown said. “A lot of the debris has been cleaned up, but a lot of people are still dealing with insurance. A lot of people are still living in the middle of it.”

Of the 500 homes burned in Rancho Bernardo, Poway and Rancho Santa Fe, only 140 families have obtained permits to rebuild, said Jan Rasmussen, outreach coordinator for RB United.

Others who are lucky enough to begin reconstruction are enduring various other hassles, such as setting up cable and telephone service, buying new sheets and towels, finding new family photos to frame and ordering furniture – while holding down full-time jobs.

“It's tedious. Every time (my friend who lost her house) turns around, someone is not making it easy – insurance, phone company, her mortgage,” said Marika Szoke, a member of Fired Up Sisters, a group of women who lost their homes in the fires. It serves as one of Rancho Bernardo's clearinghouses for resource guides and donations.

Vincent Puma, 43, a contractor, is one of those who is not rebuilding his Rancho Bernardo Westwood home. He lost a lifetime's collection of rock-and-roll star Eddie Van Halen's autographed guitars, T-shirts and albums. He adores Van Halen so much that from 2003 to 2007, he attended 200 weekend concerts all over the country with his wife, Judy.

Puma and his wife are living at his grandmother's house. They no longer want to live in Rancho Bernardo, he said, but haven't decided yet where they will move.

To reconnect with music after the fires, Puma started Love and Roll Productions, he said. Its first full-scale event will be Concerts on the Green, an Oct. 24 fundraiser for fire victims at Qualcomm Stadium, where many Rancho Bernardo residents took refuge during the fires.

Qualcomm's event coordinator, Michele Kelley, said Puma has obtained a permit for the show and paid a deposit to reserve space for 10,000 people.

Ironically, the headliner will be Great White, the band that was performing at a Rhode Island club in 2003 when on-stage pyrotechnics started a blaze that engulfed the club, killing 100 people. A booking agent for the band said it has the San Diego concert on its schedule.

Puma also has lined up Sweet, a British glam-rock band, and Dokken, which plays metal-rock music.

Puma said he will donate 90 percent of the proceeds from the concert to RB United and keep 10 percent to cover overhead.

“I'm not looking to make any money,” he said. “I'm trying to turn a negative into a positive thing.”

In the meantime, Puma said he has started a new Van Halen collection. He bought an autographed Van Halen 1984 album cover and a green-and-white electric guitar signed by the band. He is looking for more memorabilia.

“Music promotes healing. If everybody can give back, life would be better,” he said.

Sounds like something Ed could be involved with. Maybe do an appearance and play a solo or even get the band to play a couple of tunes.

I can't imagine what those folks are going thru with those fires.

I was thinking the same thing. The '04 and '07/'08 tours combined were closer to 150.

But let's not forget that this man and his family just lost EVERYTHING they own... Van Halen tour dates really don't mean shit at this point guys!

As happens quite often, it's very likely the reporters error, he probably screwed up the quote.

As you said Ace, it's beside the point.

Wonder how much he's claiming that stuff was worth on the insurance?...

"Uh, yeah, uh... I had like 35 signed guitars, man!! They were like, uh... $25,000 each!!! Now there's nothing left but the strings and the hardware!!"

That's a darn shame he lost all that stuff. Not sure what I'd do if I lost my Halen stuff. But I would go see the show he's putting together tho. Sounds like a good one and I love Great White. Not sure how they're sounding nowadays but it'd be kewl to hear some live tunes from them.

Eddie: "I never gave that guy permission to have stuff signed by me. Next time I see him, he better be wearing a cup."

Seriously, I feel for the guy. I have a ton of Van Halen shirts and a framed, autographed photo of the band from '04. My fiancee and I have been to 11 VH shows since '04.

Hopefully, he at least gets a signed guitar and a meet-and-greet.
I don't have a cool signature. Deal with it!

Why would Eddie help out one single fan when he hasn't been helping the 1,000's he already has for the last 4 years?

That's pretty much how I feel. The guy don't give a shit. Maybe he has done some charity work here and there, but overall, he doesn't care IMO.
