Default What Kind Of Guitar is That?

Hey, anybody who has Comcast Digital Cable, go to the concert.tv under the ON DEMAND MUSIC and check out the Huey Lewis concert they have from the mid-80's.

I'm wondering what type of guitar Chris Hayes is playing. Looks like a Les Paul Special double-cutaway with an explorer type headstock. It's got a Floyd or Kahler as well.

Anybody know if this was custom or actually available out there somewhere?

I think it's a custom made Gibson of some kind. Maybe he liked the look of the LP cutaway and the feel of an Explorer neck. I don't know, but it looks pretty sweet! As for the trem, it's looks like a Kahler.

Check this out: Freeze this at :17 of the vid. Is this the one you are referring to? It looks sorta like a Gibson Spirit XPL...

    Here's another view. It's apparently a 1985 model.

Funny that this would show up on a VH forum... because EVH and Chris Hayes are my 2 main guitar influences -- ever since I was little!

The guitarist in my band has that same cream colored guitar. He always has people asking about it. Has a Kahler tremlo on it.

I can ask him questions about it

My favorite is the Les Paul with an Explorer headstock, like Aldo Nova used.

Man, I wish I could get my hands on one of these!

Funny! HLN is one of the reasons why I picked up the guitar, and EVH is the reason why I never put it down!

I used to love that guitar! Forgot all about it. As soon as I saw the thread before I viewed the vid, I had Washburn in mind. Not sure if he endorsed Washburn officially at any point, but he was playing them around the time Sports came out. He was also the first guy I remember using the big Kahler trems. Some of those Washburns had a similar body shape to this guitar, but more of a lake 80's Kramer/Jackson-ish style headstock. Hayes was a great player though. Does he still play with Huey? Just wondering come to think of it.

If I recall correctly, Hayse left the band a number of years ago.

That's what I thought. Just wasn't sure if he reunited since then. He had a great feel didn't he? Nice hooks, pop for sure, but a nice gritty feel to his sound.

Oh yeah, in my opinion, he always seemed like he could have been in a much harder playing band and been right at home. Not that often you find a guitarist with that kind of tone and ability in a pop band.
