    Default The great improvisers

I've always thought that the real magic of music comes out when a player cuts loose and improvises. The excitement of not knowing where it's going to go, if the player is good enough, is what I love most.

Obviously the jazz guys are much better than most other genres, simply because that's the whole point of jazz.

Keith Jarrett has to be one of the best. He goes out on stage, often not knowing a single thing he will play that night. He starts and sees where it goes. Takes skill and guts in equal measure. This was an encore he did in the 80's.

Eric Mongraine is one of those unique guitarists who also happens to be pretty damn good on ideas. Though he plays compositions, he uses what he has as a framework for improvised ideas. He says he plays about 20% composed, 80% improvised on any given piece. This is the now legendary (in acoustic guitar circles at least) "Airtap".

Steve Gadd, possibly my favourite drummer of all time, jamming with Stanley Clarke on bass. Pretty much indescribably good. Drummers should not be able to do this....

Anyone else found any magic moments on youtube etc?
A man could lose himself in a country like this.

My thoughts: Keith Jarrett, amazing player, hard to watch. He looks like he's about to get a nut at any time.

Steve Gadd was good. There's something to be said for holding back and not just banging on the things, and he's a good example of that.

My favorite by far is Eric Mongraine. Absolutely unbelievable and beautiful piece of work. Bravo!

Don't know if any of you are familiar with Tim Reynolds, who sits in frequently with Dave Matthews on both acoustic and electric, but the guy is beyond brilliant.

I've seen him many times through the years, including 4 times this year with the Dave Matthews Band, and I can tell you what he's doing this tour is leaving people speechless. Truly fucking amazing.

VH with Dave ('78-'84) - The best years....the "real" VH.
VH with Sam ('86-'96) - Incredible era....."We have renamed this town 'New Halen!'.
VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

Ever hear of the Grateful Dead? The Led Zeppelin of improvisation/jamming
Wolfie is not Mike, but he's more than ok.
Mike is gone, but not forgotten. They played some amazing shows from 2007-2015; some people are in denial about it.

Yes, Tim Reynolds is very good....Saw him several years ago at a small Blues festival in upstate, NY....Since then I've heard a few of his collaborations with Dave Matthews on the Jam Band channel 17 on Sirius.

Regarding "Jam Bands" and improvisational playing, it's hard to beat bands like The Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule, The Derek Trucks Band, Widespread Panic, etc....Not only do they not play the same set every night, but they constantly push the boundaries of their songs. Oh, and it's one of the most happening and vibrant scenes in music these days.
