Default The AT Custom Natural Flame Tele!

It has been a productive year for my custom guitars. Several months ago I couldn't help but dream up idea after idea for various guitar incarnations. Now, having worked on many of these instruments simultaneously, most are reaching the point of fruition and getting done--quickly.

The first axe completed from this "idea boom" is a simple and almost traditional Telecaster. Some may recall that one of my earliest custom guitars was a translucent blue ash Tele. I built that one because I'd always wanted a Tele but just couldn't find one that fit all of my likes. It did indeed turn out to be an amazing instrument, but I put a humbucker pickup in the bridge position which essentially took away the familiar country "twang" Telecasters are known for and instead turned it into more of a rock guitar. So in the great purchase wave of guitar parts earlier this year I bought up a gorgeous double-bound alder body with a flame maple top from an excellent builder named Steve Frazier. It matched perfectly with a Musikraft neck I already had stocked, and I carefully chose very typical Tele parts from there on out. The Musikraft neck, incidentally, was built with an asymmetrical back profile nearly identical to my highly-favored Wolfgang guitars; it was instantly comfortable and familiar to my hands. I finished this Tele in my new favorite way: stained like furniture (back and sides only), sealed with Tru-Oil (gunstock oil), and polished with wax. I'm also very proud to say I completed this guitar top-to-bottom completely on my own; all assembly, routing, and wiring was done by me! (There was still some helpful advice from the gang of friends, though.)

Pictures of this guitar in progress, along with my other guitar projects, can be found in the photos section of my MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/andrewthomassolomusic.

The parts list and photos are below!

SGF Solid Alder/Flamed Maple Top Body--Tru-Oil/Wax Finish, Walnut Stain Back & Sides, Double White Binding
Musikraft Maple Tele Neck--1 5/8" Graphite Nut, Asymmetrical Profile, 10" Radius, 6105 Medium Frets, Black Inlays, Tru-Oil/Wax Finish
GFS Vintage Alnico 62 Single Coil Bridge Pickup
GFS Classic TC Alnico Single Coil Neck Pickup w/ Chrome Pickup Ring
    Chrome String-Thru Hardtail Bridge
250K Volume & Tone Potentiometers w/ Chrome Knobs
3-Way Pickup Selector Switch w/ Black Tip
    Chrome Control Cover
Switchcraft Jack w/ Chrome Jack Plate
    Schaller M6La Mini Chrome Tuners
    Nickel String Ferrules
    Graph-Tech String Trees
    Chrome Neck Plate

Andrew, I'm beginning to not like you. You have all the guitars that I want.

Seriously though, that is a freakin' sweet axe.

At bit of a non sequiter--I've been playing a $300 Japanese Tele for 7 years now and I dare anyone to close their eyes and say that is plays better than the American ones off the shelf. I know all the Japanese models don't play like mine does, but I got a pretty money one and it is one of my favorite guitars.

    Very cool!
I'm finishing up 2 Tele's now and I must say they're addictive. For a long time they really didn't do it for me, but the more I see the history, and simplicity of the early models they're growing on me. I think my next personal ground-up custom is going to be a Veena (my Wolfgang/EBMM/Kramer) built with Les Paul specs.

That is beautiful. I love the contrast between blonde wood and chrome hardware.

That looks great Andrew, a tele is such a useful instrument. I love the walnut look it has a lot of charachter. If anyone is interested, I have an old Charvel tele body with the logo plate and screws for sale.

Tha is very nice. I read a quote from jeff beck one time , he was saying how he thought the tele is the most versatile guitar ever made.

Thanks for all the compliments everyone! It does indeed play awesome and very much has that classic Tele tone--which was something I didn't really have in any of my other guitars.

I also now have a wife who gets a distressed look on her face when I tell her about the "new" guitar ideas I have. She can't wait to buy the house that will have the room that will hold all my guitars that she then won't have to see all the time.

I think the basic rule with guitars is this: If you like it, it's good.

The Veena on your website was awesome, as was that LP you just built!

The Ping block fit the trem perfectly and is awaiting placement with one of my upcoming custom guitars. I may get antsy and affix it to one of my Wolfies, though. You should be selling those things to Wolfgang owners.

    Hey AT,

Before you stained/tru-oiled that guitar, what prep work did you do on the body? Did you just sand it super smooth, and then start the finishing, or did you seal the ends, or the entire body? I'm going to do a stain/tru-oil finish on a solid Alder guitar (no binding or cap), and I was wondering if any sealer or wood filler is required before staining and then oiling.
