police arrest man with .491 blood alcohol level

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — State Police arrested a man early Tuesday whose blood alcohol level allegedly was .491 — more than six times the legal limit — which they believe is the highest ever recorded in Rhode Island for someone who wasn’t dead.

Stanley Kobierowski, 34, of North Providence, was arrested after he drove into a highway message board on Interstate 95 in Providence, Maj. Steven O’Donnell said.

After police arrived, Kobierowski had trouble getting out of the car, then grabbed it and refused to move, forcing troopers to carry him to the breakdown lane before taking him back to their barracks, O’Donnell said.

A Breathalyzer test showed Kobierowski had blood alcohol readings of .489 followed by .491, Kobierowski said, the highest readings anyone at the State Police or the Department of Health could remember for someone who didn’t end up dead.

The legal limit in Rhode Island is .08. A blood alcohol of .3 is classified as “stupor,” .4 is “comatose” and .5 is considered fatal, according to the health department.

“Our only assumption could be that the person has a serious alcohol problem,” O’Donnell said. “The person’s lucky they survived. There’s no doubt he would have gotten killed or killed someone if he had continued on the route he was taking.”

Kobierowski was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he was put in the detoxification unit and sedated, O’Donnell said. He was scheduled to be arraigned later Tuesday on charges of drunken driving and resisting arrest.

The morning jocks were talking about this on air in Denver this morning...he's a professional drunk! Probably hasn't been below the legal limit for a few years.
A little more volume in the headphones please.

I was in a car accident where the guy who hit me blew a .38. I never thought I would see anything higher than that. The accident was at 4 in the afternoon so at least I still have that going for me.

I had a patient in ICU at one point that had a BAL of .52 he wasn't dead but probably wished he had been. He killed 6 people before he wrecked his own truck. He had no license, no insurance ect.... he was an alcoholic, had been arrested for DUI 8 times, yes 8 times and never did any jail time. (this was in the early 90's laws are different now.

He was a scary mess going through withdrawals - I was in charge of watching his blood oxygen levels - making sure he was getting enough oxygen. Turned out after all this he had actice TB, lovely. Thankfully , none of us tested +.

I can empathize with alcoholism, we've had MANY talks about that on this board, but getting into a car repeatedly and driving....I can't process or forgive that....he should have been in jail .

How he got away with that all these years with no jail time is amazing. Going back out and doing it again is plain stupid. That's a lotta alcohol.

When we were having our baby, at one point we were in a two-person holding room where you're separated by that thin curtain that offers only slightly more privacy than the cone of silence. There was a young girl (had to be late teens or very early 20's) moaning and such on the other side of the curtain. When her mother arrived we heard them tell her that the girl had a .40. My jaw fell to the floor. I'd never heard of one that high. Sheesh... And she was definitely a weepy drunk...

I don't know what my highest BAL was, but I'm probably puking shortly after a .20 or so. .491 is absolutely crazy. A friend of mine got nailed for DUI a few years back and I think his BAL was a .24, and he was fricking hammered!

Some people have a high tolerance for alchohol. My 24 year old daughter just got her second DUI after blowing a .284. Her first 3 years ago was a .247. The bad part was that the jailers and the cops said she didn't seem drunk. Passed all the sobriety tests, but flunked the breathalizer. She was pulled over both times for swerving. The first one she was talking on her cell phone, and the second was slippery roads.

Back in 1999, I finally got my first and only DUI. I was a career drunk. Drank everyday, all day. Half gallon of vodka every single day.
Two hours after I was popped (long story) I blew a .470. Who knows what it was at the time of arrest.
Then, I felt like a hero. But I was one sick fuck. Was saturated normaly.

    I almost killed me.
I havent had a drink in 7 years.
