Default Show Review and Set List: Foxwoods, CT, July 20, 2008

Note: This post was copied and edited from my post at redrocker.com

I went to the Sammy Hagar show at Foxwoods in Connecticut on July 20, 2008. The venue seats 4,400, and they closed the mezzanine level (a good deal for those who paid lower prices and got moved up to the expensive seats.) I got 12th row tickets the day of the show - the whole row was available six hours before showtime, so I'd say they were held back from general sale until day of show. I'd say there were about 2,000 people, and I wonder what percentage of those were radio promos or casino comps.

It actually was quite a strong show. The new venue was excellent, and I just can't say enough about his band. I do miss the keyboards and Jesse Harms though.

The set list is listed at the end of this post.

    As far as my thoughts...

    Good
    • The set list started off really strong.
    • It was thrilling to hear an acoustic version of Dreams. When I saw Vic with an acoustic guitar, I thought they were going to play Mexico. Then Sammy started talking about the importance of dreams, and he delivered a really nice message. I just couldn't believe that they were going to play Dreams acoustic, and they did!
    • Vic absolutely ripped it up during Rock Candy. It kind of reminded my how fans of, say, the Allman Brothers, love it when the band goes into a 20 minute jam. I rarely see that at hard rock concerts I go to, but Vic (and the band) jammed for a good 3 - 4 minutes while Sammy was entertaining two of the three on-stage sections.
    • Sammy played Celebration (Kool and the Gang) as a bridge in the middle of Best of Both Worlds. I thought it was unique, and fitting for the atmosphere. He made a funn comment saying that tinkering with the song would be "just another think Eddie will be mad at [him] for."
    • Sammy brought out a guest, 15-year old guitarist named Desire Bassett, to play Led Zeppelin's Rock and Roll. He said it was one of the most bizarre things he's done. She could shread. However, IMO, any version of Rock and Roll can't hold a flame to the version on Live Without a Net.
    • The acoustics in this brand new venue were excellent.
    • Nice of Sammy to recognize that most of the crowd probably doesn't live in the vicinity of Foxwoods, and that with the ticket prices and the gas prices, he was appreciative that we spent that kind of money to come to the show.
    • I thought the intro videos were cool. Always brings fond memories for me to see footage from the Live Without A Net concert. Sammy with the head set and Eddie in those pink parachute pants. What a gas!

    Disappointing
    • Not too much talking, but just enough to be a bit of a time suck. For example, he bantered with a front row fan who asked if he/she could have his Sam I Am hat. That got into a coversation about his sunglasses, etc. Casinos always have time limits. Sammy first said he wasn't restricted, but then contradicted himself at the end, saying he didn't want to get fined (by staying on stage too long). I thought with a little less talking he could have fit one more song in, such as Red, or Mexico, which I've seen as listed songs on this tour.
    • Serious Juju doesn't really work for me as a live song.

    Set List (in order)

    55
    1 way to rock
    I'll fall in love again
    top of the world
    3 lock box
    why can't this be love

    Eagles Fly
    best of both worlds
rock and roll (with Desiree Bassett)
    little white lie
    serious juju
    dreams (acoustic)
    heavy metal
    mas tequila

    Encore

Seems like a short set list, how much were the tickets?

Seems that M2M has been erased from Sam's memory since the 10/13 tour. Please stop the acoustic Cabo Wabo and replace it with a full version.

Project Revolution was the same day in Hartford, I am sure that stole some away. I was one of them. I would have gone to see Sammy if it weren't the same day. Basically just went for Chris Cornell who friggin' rocked.
I used to jog but the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass.

Actually, including the opening visual experience, which included the "clips from the past" and the video for I'm On A Roll, he played 1 hour 50 minutes, which was longer than the on stage time for the Hagar/The Other Half show at Mohegan in 2006.

Tickets were $35, $65, and $75, which was a heck of a lot more than the $20 tickets at Mohegan in 2006.

Well, I know that I was on the cantina platform during a show at the Gibson Ampitheater in late 2006 at the tail end of the Livin' it Up tour and we all 'marched' around stage high-fiving Vic and Sam and Mona and all that jazz while they were playing Marching to Mars.

Plus, they did the same exact thing at the Devore/Other Half show earlier in the summer of 2006 to the same song.

My understanding is, they alternated BOBW and MtM as 'the song' in which the Redheads onstage got to parade around with Sam.

Kinda gay, actually, didn't want to do it, but you really had no choice.

But yes, they definitely played Marching to Mars during the tour.

Sam's setlists are getting pretty tiring. Same shit the past three years. Guess I'll be waiting until Chickenfoot for the next time I see him

We had a blast at the show. That girl was smokin' on the guitar.

I really enjoyed the intimacy of the show and his interactions with the crowd. My lord, that acoustic version of Dreams was worth the price of admission.

    Bring on Chickenfoot!

Yeah, it's time to change the set. In essence, he's been touring the Livin' it Up set for over two years now, with a few new songs added here and there, and the same Van Hagar songs show to show.

Though when the first tour started, he had Judgment Day and Humans Being in the setlist. Which was good, though Vic's tone on HB was off. But he really needs to ditch the WCTBL, TOTW, BOBW, FWYS standards - even while playing 'em with the Wabos and not The Other Half, and throw in some different shit.

He's always going to play One Way, 55, Mas Tequila, and Heavy Metal. I think those are set in stone. Everything else can vary, the Halen and the solo stuff.

I'm sure if the Satch project tours, most of the album will be played. It'll be interesting to see which VH songs and/or Sam songs Joe will cover. At the Vegas Palms date, the rumor had it Joe jammed 5150 with Mike and Sam, but it seems he just encored with them on three songs - Mr. Fantasy, Going Down, and Rock and Roll.

I wonder why he isn't playing Open?

I can't imagine he's not going to play some harder stuff with the Scorps co-bill, given the audience at hand.

Sam could come up with a helluva lot better set list than that.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Sam has said "Dreams" is his favorite Van Halen song. And for me I can honestly say that song was one of the biggest reasons I wanted to become a songwriter. For a song that actually lacks some trademark VH bits (background vocals, awesome EVH rhythm guitar playing), it really hits the mark as far as top notch arranging, production, and performance is concerned. It's the lone song on 5150 where I can actually say I like the electronic drum sounds (a lot) and 80s-style mix. So all that being said, I thought the idea of an acoustic version of "Dreams" was absurd. But I checked out a performance on YouTube and was genuinely blown away at how good it was! No compromise at all--it was a great song presented still as a great song. Very cool...
