    Default WATCHMEN 2009

The story is already there to work from, and the look of the movie seems amazing. How can they possibly get this one wrong?

I saw this preview at The Dark Knight and I thought it was a rip off of The Justice League.

Man, that looks intriguing. But there are so many fuckin' ways they can screw this one up, and this is the one graphic novel they do NOT want to fuck up. There are basically only two graphic novels on the top of the heap, and they are Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns.

Plus no studio's yet done Alan Moore any favors onscreen.

But I gotta admit, that trailer seems...promising.

LOL, no, if anything, the Justice League is a pale shadow of Watchmen. Same with Avengers, Defenders, Outsiders, Titans, Authorities, Wildcats, Justice Societies, or any other band of superdicks.

    The quintessential superhero tale.

Pretty much hailed as the King from anybody worth their salt in the comic biz.

I'd have to say... if you have not read the book(s)... opinions will not go far when it comes to Watchmen. It's that good of a story.

Not Shakespeare at any length... but cheesy CGI can fuck up Hamlet just the same... that and a director/movie studio's literal interpretation of something they do not fully understand.

Anyway... it looks cool and should clock in at... three hours.

    Actually, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons based the characters on the old Charlton Comics characters. Nite Owl=Blue Beetle, Dr. Manhattan=Captain Atom, Rohrshach=The Question I can't remember the others off the top of my head. DC acquired the rights to the heroes after Charlton went under in the 70s. There are certain archetypes that are repeated across the genre, so there will be some similarities to JLA or Avengers (Nite Owl has a little Batman in him and EW compared The Comedian to Captain America), but according to an interview I read in Wizard magazine a while back, the Watchmen were based on the Charlton characters. Moore & Gibbons just couldn't get permission to use them directly. I just had to get my geek on. :}

Jackie Earle Haley is playing Rorschach?

    Fuckin' beautiful.

This flick's gettin' all the buzz at San Diego's ComicCon, which has turned into pretty much the USA's pop culture zeitgeist meter year to year for 'event' films.

    Same director that did 300.

    This one could be epic.

Oh, please, please, please don't screw this one up. It's a great novel, and the preview looked like they were following the book closely. For those of you that posed that didn't know what was going on - read the book and all will be clear!!

Well, I don't know a damn thing about the comic, but I saw the trailer when we went to see, 'The Dark Knight'. It looked badass! Me and my sister turned to each other and said, "We've got to see that!"

It's interesting to note that the scenes featured in the trailer are exact duplicates of scenes from the novel. The Night Owl's ship rising from the East River, Dr. Manhattan's transformation and his adventure in Viet Nam, The Comedian's plunge from a window to his death, all intact. This and scenes shown at the official site bode quite well.

Yet I do wonder how a novel of this length will be condensed to a mere two hour film. Obviously certain parts will be eliminated, which is a shame. For instance, there is a fascinating sub story in the book revolving around a comic book entitled "The Black Freighter". The tale is used as a clever device to move the plot along, yet would more than likely confuse people by distracting from the narrative if a straighforward approach is used. Also of note is the heartbreakingly poetic tale of Dr. Manhattan, which could serve as a full length film in and of itself.

Also questionable is the young age of the actors used in the film. In the book, the youngest character is around 30-35, while the rest are in their late 40's-early 50's.

Perhaps being a fan of the book, I'm a bit obsessed with detail. Yet I am not alone in this. Check out this home made trailer for the film, by a talented fan. Although it includes no scenes from the movie, for a fan generated offering, it's quite compelling. Here's hope the film-makers do as nice a job.

I really enjoyed '300' when I saw it. If you ask me, this movie holds quite a bit of promise, coming from the same direction and based off of an extraordinary concept IMO. I'm anticipating 3/6/09
