Default Band most have never heard of but you remember fondly

Anyone else out there have a certain local or national band that they remember enjoying as a youngster?

Mine would have to be from back in the New England days when I was young a band called The Gringos. My dad used to manage a pretty large hotel called the Dedham Inn in Dedham, Ma and he was friends of the band from their start on Cape Cod and he also used to do security work for them (he was 6'7" and 300 lbs.)
We used to spend many a weekends staying there in a suite and The Gringos performed there quite often as they traveled the N.E. club circuit.
I can remember one night they brought me up on stage in front of I'd say 500 or so people and gave me a tamborine and I just froze up there but later felt more at ease and actually started to keep beat.
They played alot of (70's) Chicago tunes as they had a very good horn section and a very good drummer. the band went through a few lineup changes but core was mainly Clyde on Drums, Joe on vox/guitar, Allan on vox/keyboards and Jim Miller on trumpet.
They put out two albums and one I actually caught on T.V. on an episode of WKRP as Johnny Fever was holding the album jacket on the episode when they hired some other DJ to replace Fever who was then caught with cocaine by Fever and Mr. Carlson thought it was foot powder and his foot went numb.

I have see them at the Mill Hill Club in West Yarmouth, Ma as well as a reunion show they did like 14 years ago at Christine's in Dennisport, Ma. It was strange seeing them as a grown up then and having drinks with them during their breaks and smoking a joint with Clyde outside.
'Old Van Halen, when I was in it-classic Van Halen-makes you wanna drink, dance and screw, right? And the new Van Halen encourages you to drink milk, drive a Nissan and have a relationship.' - David Lee Roth.

Fayetteville, NC has no music scene to speak of; however, there's a pretty good local crew named The Fifth that is trying to keep rock alive. The singer, Roy Cathey, was in a band called Gibraltar during the 80's, and then went on to start Cold Sweat with Marc Ferrari of Keel fame. It was a dud.

Back in the day, however, Fayetteville had a thriving little music scene, and boasted of being the home of BJ Thomas' band, and one of Elvis' last piano players. Clint Lowery from sevendust is from Fayetteville; a guy I played with in high school named Troy McLawhorn is currently playing with Evanescence; and current Widespread Panic/former ABB/Aquarium Rescue Unit guitarist extraordinaire Jimmy Herring is a native son as well.

Much more than y'all wanted to know, I'm sure.

I miss a Raleigh band named Cry of Love quite a bit.

Back in the last throws of the hair metal and just just before the grunge shit took hold; there was a band called Sleeze Beez. The release was called "Screwed, Blued and Tattooed." Their big hit was "Stranger than Paradise." The whole release rocked though.

Sadly, I played the tape to death and now it's out of print and I can't find it anywhere.

I remember that, my little sister had it. Didn't they do "Lips and Hips", or am I thinking of a different band?

I think I am the only guy in the Raleigh area who plays guitar but doesn't have an Audley Freed (sp?) story. Never met him that I'm aware of.

I never saw them, but I'll say The Connells. I think since I didn't live in Raleigh until the end of their run, I didn't get sick of them (some people seemed to).

He wasn't local, but I miss seeing Kevn Kinney from DrivinNCryin. They used to make it here quite a bit, but now it seems like its every year or two.

I saw him sit in with Gov't Mule a couple of times, but I never saw Cry of Love at all. I don't know much about him, other than the fact that "Brother" was a great album, IMO.

Gotta go with the Sea Hags from SF. They released one major label album then imploded due to drugs but they were the shit.

Even more obscure was this blues cover bar band called Big Joe and the Licks. I was at this hole in the wall bar back in 1989. It was my birthday and I was still drinking like a fish back then. My memory may be innaccurately good about them as I had lost count as to how many Mudslides I drank after the 20th but I remember those guys playing everything from Muddy Water to Cream and I was digging them. I was so drunk I pissed my pants while dancing but refused to stop because they were playing "(Boom Boom) Out Goes the Lights".

They had a tune called "All Lips N Hips".

Good call. "Brother" was great. I also have a 4 song live EP from '93 including a nice cover of "Ain't Superstitious".

Seen Audley with the Black Crowes a couple of times- once with Jimmy Page. And I have a Gov't Mule show with him where they perform Zep's "Houses Of The Holy" album in it's entirety. Great stuff.

Mentioning Cry of Love reminded me of a couple other cool bands from that time period- Brother Cane, and Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies.
