Default Help With Oil / Natural Looking Wood Finishes

I have a client who wants a les paul-like wood color on the guitar I am building for him, but I have only used paints on guitars before. What is the best way to stain a guitar, and bring out the grain, in a sunburst kind of pattern using wood stains? Or a single color stain would be good too... And then what do I have to use to finish it and seal the wood?

I have heard of some simple rub on process using tru-oil or something like that, and then just putting on a coat of wax???

    Thanks.

I've had a lot of luck with the staining/Tru-Oil approach, and it's become my favorite way to finish guitars now. In fact, I've got two guitars and one bass in progress that I'm doing that way.

mrj--check out the photos on my MySpace page to see the Thinline Strat I did along with the in-progress ones. They look nice. www.myspace.com/andrewthomassolomusic

I was thinkin' about solid 2-piece Alder (no top). I've got a place where I can get a blank with pretty nice grain on it.

Okay, now explain what you mean by "Les Paul-like wood color".

    Sunburst?

Wow -- those stained ones look EXACTLY like what I am going for! Great work! Could you give me a simple step by step about what stuff you use to stain, and then how you seal / finish them off?

I also saw that picture of your guitar necks.... would you be willing to sell one of your Wolfgang necks?...

    Sunburst?
Sorry, I was just throwing something out there. I just want some shade of finish that is in the realm of a cherryburst Axis, or a standard light Tobacco burst strat. Something that transitions from reddish/brown to yellowish. I would like to do a cherryburst or sunburst-ish finish, but I'm not sure how hard that is.
