    Default Wii....clueless non-gamer here

OK, so we got the kid a Wii for his birthday (next Sun, 7/20). I havent seriously played any video game crap since long ago when I would lie in bed, smoke pot, and play Mario Bros on my original Nintendo.
So....I know I'll probably need all kinds of other shit for this thing. We got the Wii Sports pack, and that's it.
What else do we need so he can actually PLAY this thing on Sunday? And of course, any recommendations for games would be helpful...just keep in mind its a 11 yr old boy, and I REFUSE to buy him Guitar Hero...at least until he learns 3 chords on the guitar he HAD to have last year!

    Thanks!!

Get WiiPlay, it's a fun disc with several mini games on it and also includes an extra Wii Controller. Excite Truck rocks, off road racing and as you win and clear levels, you get better trucks to race with. Any of the Mario titles, Super Mario Galaxy is pretty good.

If you plan on hooking it up to the internet, it has wireless built in, and you can purchase Wii "points" cards and purchase old school games (Super Mario Bros, etc.)

I agree on Guitar Hero, wait for the next edition.

Hey Chris: Make sure to come back and let us know how your kid liked it. Our son is turning 10 in a few weeks and the Wii is a possibility.

In a perfect world, I'd want the kid to enjoy it enough to play for an hour, but not love it so much he has to play for five. Not asking too much, huh?

I picked up a Wii a couple of weeks ago. So far my favorite game is Wii Fit. The balance games are surprisingly addictive! They're a great mix of simplicity, challenge, and a play balance that keeps you coming back for more.

Sounds like a fun game for a party!

Pick up a Wii Zapper. It comes bundled with a great Link crossbow game with 25+ stages. Great value for $20, and it's lots of fun.

The aforementioned Wii Play title is also good for those 'pick up and play' moments.

Though, I suspect once you and your family try Wii Sports Bowling just once, you won't feel the need to purchase any other games for a while...

Just sitting back watching E3 and it looks like another interesting year for Wii. The long awaited Star Wars light saber game and another Rayman:Raving Rabbids.

I was just checking out the Star Wars game...Im gonna have to get that for ME
Thanks for all the ideas, guys (and gals). Think Im gonna just pick up another Wiimote (I feel stupid just typing that) and the Zapper for now, and then as he figures out what he wants/needs, we'll deal with it then.
And for the person asking about getting one for a 10 yr old, go for it! My son decided he had to have one after 6 hours of Wii-ing at a friend's house, who was also 10.

If you are going to get another Wiimote, may as well get Wii Play, it's like getting the game disc for $10 when you factor in that the controller is in the package. It's got a few cool mini games, including a neat target game, billiards and one called "Find Mii" which the wife and I play together now and then.

Just be careful of Wii "shoulder" and "elbow", as you can overdo it on Wii Sports, trust me.

Good idea on the Wii Play...think I'll do that.
My kid is so psyched for his birthday...remember when we all were like that?? He just thinks its the coolest thing that both the first man on the moon AND the first landing on Mars (Viking) were on his birthday.

Indeed. I could hardly carry a milk jug after my 10-home run, 5,835-ft. performance on Home Run Derby.

Wiiplay is awesome and comes with a nunchuck I believe. The Wii Zapper and Crossbow challenge is also an excellent game and value. Also I would recommend getting the rechargeable base for the Wiimotes. They come with rechargeable batteries. Very important!!

Rayman Raving Rabbits is hilarious and has about 40 challenges in one game. It's affordable and a great value.

Mario Olympics is lame but Mario Galaxy is amazing and Mario Cart is a lot of fun.
As usual, there is a great woman behind every idiot.
