Arnie: Don't stub out movie smokes

Arnold Schwarzenegger says children need to be warned often about the dangers of smoking, but Hollywood should not feel pressured to ban cigarettes and cigars from films aimed at youngsters.

Despite research that shows scenes of tobacco use can tempt kids to light up, the Terminator star-turned California governor said film-makers needed artistic freedom, particularly in historical settings.

He scoffed at the notion that someone would play Winston Churchill without his trademark stogie in hand.

"I personally don't believe that we should erase cigarettes in movies. I don't believe that we should erase it when someone smokes a cigar in a movie. I think that we should remind people and kids all the time about the dangers of smoking," the Republican governor said.

"To suddenly tell actors not to smoke a cigarette in a movie when they portray a character is ludicrous. I think this is going too far."

The governor's comments came at a news conference where major studios announced they would include anti-smoking announcements on millions of youth-rated DVDs of motion pictures that included smoking scenes.

Disney began including anti-smoking messages on certain DVDs earlier this year. Other studios joining in are Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, 20th Century Fox, Universal Pictures and Warner Bros.

The agreement involving the studios and the state of California was brokered by the Entertainment Industry Foundation - a philanthropy. The state developed the 30-second announcements for the DVDs, which will appear in the opening minutes.

I'm fairly anti-tobacco in principle, but I actually agree with my (former)
govanuh on this one - even if I'm unsure of his motives. We can't make it
a habit to sanitize everything. There are dangers out there and all the PC
motivated bullshit will not change that. It's like here, they do habitually
mosaic out every instance of an actor taking a drink or a puff - not when
they're holding it mind you, but only when they raise the questionable product
to their mouth. I don't think any kid out here is being fooled: "Hmmm, what's
going on with that cigarette? Why did it go all fuzzy?" Ludicrous. Especially
when there is a ciggy vendor every 20 feet on the road who will happily sell
    to anyone.

On the plus side, the movies often leave the tits untouched, so to speak.
I'm guessing the governator could get behind that idea, too.

I wonder if the Govinator put out his ceegar when he was making this statement??

I have to agree with Arnie on this one. Too much PC is creeping into our personal lives. If I want to kill myself by smoking, it's my choice not the government's.

When I read that Bruce Willis didn't smoke or swear in the new Die Hard that came out last year...I decided not to go see it in theatres.

Then in Vanity Fair, Bruce says, "Yeah...I don't smoke in this movie because I don't want younger people to start smoking because John Mclane smokes...."

That did it for me. I mean enough is enough.

We can't show smoking in movies....but we CAN show:

    1. Terrorism
    2. Executions
    3. Serial Killings
    4. Gun violence
    5. Sexual abuse

All those are fine.....but smoking???.....that's terrible.

    Look at it this way...

Say a law or standard went into effect that did ban smoking on screen. That would mean that should Van Halen and WB ever decide to release a DVD of old concert footage from '78/79 they would either have to edit out 50% of the Eddie footage because he's got a cig in his mouth or burning on his headstock. That or they'd have to digitally edit out the offending cigarette which means that at times there'd bea blur or a black box placed over it.

They'd also have to go bad and edit Led Zepplin's "The Song Remains The Same" as well.

    This is crazy.

Most studies show that kids start smoking because one or both parents also smoke. The next leading cause is having friends that smoke. Pop culture comes in a distant third.

Where does it stop, after we ban smoking in movies what other bad and unhealthy things do we ban? Driving fast? Guns? Explosions? Fast Food? Unsafe Sex? Foul Language? We've been there durring the "Post Code" Hollywood days. All we got were musicals and weak movies.

    No way.

Agreed. Wasn't it the Beatles album where they are walking across the street on the cover where someone's cigarette was airbrushed out on the US release.

As for violence? Dependent on the state of the given culture, very often movies have included more graphic violence to depict the "bad guys", thus giving justification for violence from the good guys etc.... we all know the score.

but that's going way off the point...

I don't smoke, but do agree with the guv'nuh here. Taking it out of movies or placing a warning isn't going to stop people from lighting up. The world is too PC now. I don't understand certain cities that are now trying to say that you can't smoke in a bar either. That is an adult environment and you should be allowed there. Restaurants, I can understand, as that is more a family one.

Well smoking is banned full-stop in all public places over here - be that bars, pubs, clubs, bus stations, shared flats - you get an idea. Doesn't affect me coz I only smoke at home, but whatever.

But I agree with Axx - seems like it's more leaning towards the "Demolition Man" future where like everything is banned, lmao.

I only started smoking after listening to the hidden subliminal messages backward-masked onto Donny Osmond records. Those Osmonds are a lot craftier than you think.
"Look, I'll pay you for it, what the f**k?!"

"If I don't make her happy in the bedroom the wife gets bitchy for days at a time, but when I come to bed ready for action she laughs and laughs. She even laughs while I make my moves so I know I must be pleasing her as only I can do."

Well, the original ban only seemed to target smoking in movies aimed at minors, and while I agree it's a good idea that filmmakers censor themselves and not include unnecessary scenes of people smoking in those movies, it still shouldn't be an all out ban. I don't think there was really a need for Willis to not smoke in "Die Hard 4" because it was not being aimed at minors (at least, I hope it wasn't!) but if he wanted McClane not to smoke just to show that it is possible to quit or something, that's certainly ok!

Those bastards got me started on crack.

But thinking about it some more, I think it was less subliminal messages and more to do with the sheer strain of watching a brother and sister sing love songs to each other. (.......goes to throw up)

ps. Winter, the "demolition man" comment made me laugh. Can you imagine the UK of the future? The nutrition police will be watching to make sure you've had your 5 servings of fruit and vegetables......

I guess by the world, you mean the States and perhaps a larger part of the
West, especially Britain. But I am routinely shocked at what you get away
with here, coming in as an American who's been sensitized to everything except
anything that actually matters. Prolly said it befoe, but Thailand is like the States
in the late 70s. Only with the odd reactionary short-measure thrown in - i.e the
aforesaid smoking in movies censorship or no porn but hookers everywhere. Think
stray dogs in the street and Dean Martin roasts and you begin to get the idea.
But it seems we're in agreement. Fuck the dumb shit.
