California fires threaten Big Sur, Santa Barbara County

BIG SUR, California (CNN) -- Fast-moving flames early Friday burned the steep mountainsides a mile from homes on the northern edge of Goleta, California, near Santa Barbara.

Mandatory evacuations ordered Thursday morning for mountain home communities outside Goleta were widened Thursday night as winds kicked up after sundown, making it tougher to fight the fire, a state fire spokesman said.

Farther north up the California coast, 1,400 residents of Big Sur were ordered to leave their homes because of the Basin Complex Fire, which has burned about 65,000 acres of the Los Padres National Forest in the last two weeks. At least 20 homes have been destroyed.

Besides forcing residents from their homes, the fire also is likely to deter tourists, who would usually flock to the area for the July Fourth holiday.

"I'm sure the season is just toast," Kurt Mayer, who stayed to defend his Big Sur Deli despite mandatory evacuation orders, told The Associated Press. "Usually the busiest time is July and August, so I'm sure it's just going to be zero." VideoWatch as firefighters struggle to save scenic area

The Gap Fire near Goleta has been declared the state's top priority Friday, and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has proclaimed a state of emergency in Santa Barbara County.

The fire was burning in steep and hard to reach terrain, and some of the brush fueling it has not burned in 20 years, a state fire spokesman said. No buildings have been lost yet, and no injuries were reported there.

In three days, the Gap Fire has charred 3,000 acres, a fraction of the half-million acres burned by more than 1,700 California wildfires sparked by lightning in the past two weeks.

All but about 100 of the fires are considered contained, but 20,000 federal, state and local firefighters are struggling to prevent major blazes from spreading into residential areas.

There has been one death connected to the fires -- a 63-year-old volunteer who fell ill Wednesday while he working as a lookout, watching for spot fires in Mendocino County, north of San Francisco, according to Diedre Locati, a state fire spokeswoman.

Bob Roland died at the Ukiah Valley Medical Center, where he was taken after other volunteers noticed he was getting pale and fatigued, Locati said.

In Big Sur, Dave Egbert defied the evacuation order and spent Thursday afternoon boarding up the windows of his home, hoping to save it from catching fire.

"I've been putting up this plywood because that's going to protect the house from any radiant heat," Egbert said. "That's the big thing I'm trying to do right now."

Egbert said he uses the house to host a syndicated TV garden show.

"If I don't have a house, I don't have a livelihood," he said. "So I have to keep the house going as long as I can."

Big Sur's famous Ventana Inn & Spa resort, which is undergoing an $18 million renovation, also is threatened.

Thirty-five miles of Highway 1 along the Pacific coast has been closed because of the Basin Complex Fire.

The Basin Complex Fire was 5 percent contained, while the Indians Fire -- which burned more than 80,000 acres in the Los Padres National Forest -- was 95 percent contained by Thursday evening, fire officials said.

If I'm not mistaken, VS lives up near SB I think.

My wife grew up in Santa Barbara, she actually lived pretty close to where the fires are when she lived in Goleta.

I've camped at Big Sur before, one of my favorite places to camp.

Big Sur is in my neck of the woods. You can use this link to access maps and so on:

    http://www.ksbw.com/news/16791119/detail.html

My old band was out of Big Sur. We practiced at the gate house at Little Sur. We used to play Fernwood. I love Big Sur.

Those folks are pretty tough and independant so leaving their homes has to be rough. I have my fingers crossed that the fires stay on the ridges and bipass the place.

It's pretty bad on the Peninusla when the wind is coming from the south because it brings ash with it.

    Well, that was fun.

Still not outta the woods yet, but the fire's burning upslope now, and a bit more north. Think my house won't be burning down after all.

Day before yesterday, pure hell over paradise. Raining red and white ash in thick drifts like snow, blowing around total whiteout via the sundowners, a black cloud that blotted out the sun most of the day, total eclipse. 100 foot flames seen from the 101. Rolling blackouts. Nighttime visuals particularly dramatic. Beautiful and scary. Mandatory evacuation orders downgraded today to evacuation warnings. I refused to go yesterday, kept the hoses and sprinklers going on the roofs with the neighbors. Nothing like signing a waiver of liability held by some irate sheriff who really wants to manhandle you outta your home that basically states 'if you stay, we won't be coming in for you, and please list next of kin.' LOL.

Ah, the prices of California bliss. Fire and quakes. And the occasional collegiate granola wackjob pouring your ice blended chai tea.

    It's worth it.

    Do you jog?

'Cuz if you do, there's nothing better than running on ash from a brushfire. It's like running on pillows.

    Wait until it's cool though.

Air quality's still for shit. Everyone's wearing the masks the Red Cross distributed when they're out walking their dogs, who apparently don't need them and go unprotected. (bugs me, christ, keep the animals inside when the ash and particulate ratio is higher than the O2 and nitro levels). My two wolves are crawlin' outta their skins to go out, but that just ain't gonna happen until the sunsets stop shading crimson red. and midday doesn't look like eclipse.

Crescent moon last night looked like a nightmare blood sickle.

    Be safe, bud.

This morning at work this dude told us about his friend in Montana, who took a drive down to South Dakota with another friend. When they got out of the car, they smelled smoke. They asked someone if there was a fire going. The person replied, "That's California." No shit.

"You may recognize some of these chemicals. Let's start with cyanide...The one the Aum Shinrikyo cult attempted to use to commit mass murder in a Tokyo subway in May 1995...The same cyanide produced routinely--1.4 million tons per year--for use in the production of plastics, adhesives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and so on. It seems that those who put small amounts of cyanide in subways are terrorists. But those who produce it in mass quantities and contaminate broad reaches of soil, water, and air, killing countless living beings, are not terrorists, but rather capitalists, and are counted among the finest and most powerful people on the planet."

Big Sur's the real tragedy. Up country chapparal here. Coastline cliffside postcard caliber forestry there. Our burnt 10,000 acres here won't compare to their 100,000.

That's pretty scary. You're right about that red moon sickle, pretty weird looking. The smoke's finally blown out of our area. Hope there's not more but there might well be with all the fires still burning.

You retreated there? I always wanted to do that. You must've coughed up some dough.

I've had many a cocktail at the Nepenthe Phoenix shop, the one where all the staff elected to stay behind to fight the fire against orders.

Stayed at Ventana too. And Pfeiffer State campground, and the Pfeiffer beach across the road.

Big Sur is a majestic place in every sense of the word.

I guess that the wind picked up yesterday because the Peninsula was shrouded by heavy smoke.

Weed prices are going to go through the roof!
