    Default Meeting Joe Satriani on 17 July

    On his tour to Australia I paid to meet him backstage. So I will ask him directly:
    - What he is doing with Sam/Mike;
    - his intentions/timing of a album release;
    - will they tour/where when;
    - to describe the songs.

    Anything else?

    Congrats! Joe is very nice. I've met him two or three times in Dallas. Very personable and easy to talk with.

    Please ask him why he has not played "Memories" live in over 13 years.

    Sorry guys, a bit slow here.

    Yeah saw Satch. He signed my Surfing with the Alien CD, a photo and one of my guitars. He was a really down to earth, nice guy. We had 35 minutes to ask him questions as a group. I got in a couple. I asked:

    Which living guitarist do you admire the most? He said Tom Morello and The Edge. While he knows he can play more stuff than either of them, he admires what they’re done in their band environments and they haven’t tried to emulate anyone else.

    Is the stuff he is doing with Hagar etc coming out later this year and will they tour plus is it going to be called Echo Vault? He was a little bit hazy and reluctant to go into detail including about the name but said yes they were working together and it will only come to fruition if they can all make the time in their busy schedules but he would love to be in that band for something different.

    I asked how he would feel about being a rhythm and lead player and not THE focus in the Hagar band. Said he would be excited to be in a normal band setting for a stint to work beside an amazing singer like Hagar. It would be the first time he’s done it since early 80s if they toured.

    The most interesting thing was later when we got some one-on-one time I went up to get my photo and I had my VH shirt on and he shook my hand and said “Wow man Van Halen, one of my all time favourite bands - Eddie rocks”. I said, yeah pity they don’t value their fans like you do – I had to pay thousands to go from Australia and see them in the States while you’ve been out here 3 times in the past 3-4 years. Again he looked like he had a bit to say but was reserved but still said “yeah man, I don’t know where Eddie is at these days, he’s doing some strange things”

    I suspect Hagar has given Joe his whole side of the story and Joe was reflecting on that but how professional to say they are one of his favourite bands – knowing full well I’m both a VH and a Joe fan and not bagging VH or their saga in my company.

    I’d have to say Joe was the nicest “rock star” I have ever met. After I was around him for more than 5 minutes it wasn’t even like there was a rock star in the room. I told him I tried learning the surfing with the Alien album 20 years ago and I still can’t play much of it and said I picked up country rock guitar as a joke. He laughed and said, don’t copy me man and don’t give up – he laughed that he was cr*p at country music. He was articulate, took his time with each question and each photo and he was super intelligent about things as well. His handlers were great too. Not like VH handlers back in 98 who instructed us not to shake EVH’s hand because he was the greatest ever. Don’t get me wrong I met Al and Ed, Mike and Gary and they were all really nice too like Joe, but their handlers were not.

    All in all Joe was great, he respects VH and their music, he is working with Hagar in some respect and most importantly, he melted the Tivoli in Brisbane with an amazing show.

    It's ok because he used the same knife that Eddie used to stab Mike.
