    Default 5150 III Design...

I have a theory about this head -- I know it allows for some 5150 I style tone, and also some nice Marshall Plexi imitation tone, but does anyone have the schematics? I have not seen any, and have not gone snooping inside a 5150 III chassis to see what the signal path is, but I think I have an idea....

I think the reason for the 8 preamp tubes is that between channel 2 and 3, there is a completely different signal path that switches the 'regular lead' and the 'over-the-top' channel to completely different preamps. If you do the simple math, it makes sense... Channel 2 is lower gain and more Marshall-y sounding, so I figure it is running thru 3 preamp tubes in one circuit -- the same number of preamp tubes in a Superlead.

Then for channel 3, I figure the signal is running thru the 5 other preamp tubes which mimic the configuration of the original 5150.

Has anyone else thought of this, or does anyone know for sure what the amp REALLY does?! Is this amp really a Plexi and a 5150 in the same box?? (minus the EL34's, etc...)

    Something to think about....

Tough call. Interesting theory, but I don't think it has anything to do with Plexis using 3 preamp tubes. After all, a good chunk of his distortion & sag came from the power tubes as well.

I wish they'd come out with a little combo that had just the "Blue" channel. That would be cool for my own selfish needs.

Love, love, LOVE the cab and the 20-watt speakers.

I realize a lot of his distortion was in the power tubes, -- but the Plexis' signal path is only running through 2 halves of 12AX7's and then into the Phase inverter 12AX7. That means the folks who designed the 5150III had 2 more halves to cascade gain/distortion with, or possibly 4 if the phase inverter for all channels is shared. And yes.... a combo coming out soon would be nice....
