Default 5150 Clean channel(or lack of)

I have a 5150 head and i'm trying to get the best clean tone I can without breaking the bank. I use an eq sometimes but I can never get it as clean as say a solid state. I have a 5150 II that use regularly and love but I would also like to use this one because it has groove tubes and I use it with my Firebird and it sounds wicked. Any help would be appreciated.

You'll NEVER get it as clean as a solid state amp. It's just not meant for it. I do use one rhythm on my 5150 as clean, I turn the pre-gain to about 3, and then run the post louder to compensate. Sounds fine for what I need it for, it's pretty clean. I also have a BBE Sonic Maximizer cleaning up my tone so it does sound tighter with that in there.

The 5150 does have a very useable clean. Use the rhythm channel but disengage both the bright and crunch buttons and turn the pre gain down and the post up. It won't do Fender clean, but I like it. Think of the clean break from Hot For Teacher, the little finger picked part, that's the sound you'll get. Add a bit of delay and chorus for a cool sounding clean. The only part I find difficult is the shared eq of the 5150, I can never get the cleans to sound exactly how I want once the lead channel is dialed in.

Install a humbucker splitter push/pull volume pot. I did this on my EBMM and it makes a great strat-like clean sound, even with my 5150 combo. Doesn't change the look of the guitar, either, still use the same plastic 'tone' knob.

I can live with the clean on the 5150II when I use my Kramers but on the block head I like to use my firebird and SG and I can't get it truly clean. I guess there's a trade off. Oh well fuck it, I might have to split it with my soldano or my brothers crate head.
