    Default Wow... Peavey Wolgang

Well people, I have drooled at all of the gear pictures showing 5-10 Wolfgangs in one place, etc., for a while now. (I especially like the EBMM EVH collections too....)

But the day finally came that I actually got to play a Wolfie!!!

I was wandering through a local guitar shop and found an older "Pat. Pending" all black Wolfie. It has seen better days, and is pretty worn, but not beat up. I grabbed it and started playing right away and was amazed at how well it played. Now I fully understand the obsession over these things... I may go back and buy it....

I once thought the EVH EBMMs and later the Wolfgangs were the ugliest monstrosities to ever hit the guitar market. Then one day, just slightly more than ten years ago, I went to my favorite local guitar shop--that had just received its first shipment of Wolfgang Specials--and the manager said to me: "AT! You like Van Halen. Try one of these." He put an ivory white Patent Pending Wolfgang Special in my hands, and I had to stop myself mid-sentence from my complaining about how ugly it was--because the damn thing played SO nice! It passed all the immediate tests--neck feel, unplugged tone, plugged-in tone, general comfort. Ten years and 24 Wolfgangs later, and I still can't find a guitar I like better. And... I no longer think they're ugly.

AT, I figured you would be one of the first to respond to this... I have drooled more than once over your Wolfie 'collection', or what was it, your "Arsenal?!"

I, on the other hand, have always liked the looks of these guitars -- especially the Amber EBMM in all the Balance videos, and the black one in the Humans Being video. But never having played one, I just never had an urge to buy one. I did buy an OLP amber top EBMM copy though last year, and it is surprisingly good. I am just now getting a Floyd Rose on it (it came with a strat trem...)

I have not really posted anything on this forum yet, but to make a long story short, due to money issues and my desire to build things, I had to build my own 'good' first guitar. I had a horrible strat copy, and as I improved at guitar to the point where I could cover some VH stuff, I decided I really needed a better guitar, with a Floyd Rose, so that I could do the cool divebomb tricks, etc., -- so I did a ton of research and I made a body from scratch, and bought pickups, a neck, and a Floyd to put on it. It got finished right as my Crap-o-caster basically died (a stress crack in the body right near the trem because it was made out of crappy wood that couldn't even hold the string tension... ) Anyway, after 5 months of experience trying to keep the guitar in tune, and playing it -- I finally got it adjusted to a 'gigable' state. I must have gotten lucky on the build, because until that Wolfie, I have never played a guitar I like playing anywhere near as much, and I have played about everything except EBMM's, Wolfies, and PRS's. It just has a used or worn-in comfortable feel that everyone who plays it seems to like. Of course, my opinion is clearly biased... ... but honestly, until today, I had never felt a guitar that was similar. I think that is why I like the Wolfie so much now.

By the way, here is a pic of my #001 guitar. It ain't pretty, but it is my most reliable and favorite guitar --

Now that I may begin playing very frequently and giging, I'm really starting to think I need a 'workhorse' guitar -- and I think I may have found it in the Wolfgang. Is $650 a decent price for the one I saw today, in worn condition?

    Thanks guys.

Jesus, that #001 is one ugly guitar. Sure it sounds great, though.

I dunno. The more I look at it, the more I dig it.

Like I said -- it ain't pretty, but man does it play. Actually, I didn't hardly consider anything about looks in its design. I was just going for pure comfort for me and functionality. My custom guitars since then look a little better.... I'll post some pics on the gear page soon once I have everything in one place.
