Default If you had the chance to form a VH tribute band, would you cover all eras?

I dont know whether this should be in this section or not, but I've always wondered what it would be like to front a VH tribute band, or even, just be a player, and organize the setlist, and whether to make it a all Roth material tribute, or all Hagar material, or mix it up etc.

In 93 I nearly had a tribute band lined up, but a cuppla mates chickened out....
But now in 2008, if work did'nt have the biggest chunk of my life, I'd love to do it if I had the chance and found the right players. I'd make it the ultimate VH experience, and give it a good mix from the Roth period and the Hagar period, and throw in some Hagar and Roth solo hits too. I'm mainly a Van Hagar fan, but would balance it out a bit. Ofcourse, I'd be the singer. LOL.

Heres my taste on a cool first setlist -

    1. Unchained
    2. I'm the one
    3. Panama
    4. Why cant this be love
    5. Best of both worlds
    6. Romeo Delight
    7. When its love
    8. You really got me
    9. Aint talkin' bout love
    10. Dance the night away
    11. Hear about it later
    12. Feelin'
    13. Right now
    14. Dreams
    15. Women in love
    16. Yankee Rose
    17. 5150
    18. I Cant Drive 55

    Encores-
    19. Runnin with the Devil
    20. Meanstreet
    21. Jump
    22. Top of the world

I'd call my band "A.F.U" since all the other good names have been used up.

Personally, I'd prefer to have a Dave era tribute band. If I were to have a VH tribute band with both eras, I think it'd be cool to have two singers. The name "AFU" would be perfect.

What about Fire In The Hole or Once from the Gary Era, if you want to cover all VH eras

There is Van Hagar in Sydney, Australia and OU812 in the US somewhere......they only do Hagar era only. This is different, I'd love to do all eras, including VH3 stuff too, if there was room in the set. "Poundcake" was a song I forgot to put in. As for the VH3 record, Id put in "Fire in the hole".

I like the name, and have my own idea, but I can't get myself to reveal it due to the faint chance that I may start my own relatively soon. Anyway, a guy can dream.

I would lean havy on classic VH, and flavor the set with some Sammy.

    I'd try something like this:

    Romeo Delight
    You really got me
Where Have All the Good Times Gone
    Unchained
    Women in Love
    Panama
    Cabo Wabo
    Dance the night away

    Me Wise Magic
    1984
    Jump
    House of Pain
    Runaround
    Going Crazy
    Ain't Talkin Bout Love
    Atomic Punk

    Then ...

    Mean Streets
    Human Being

I think if you're putting together a VH tribute band, it should be one era or the other unless you have two different lead singers. Actually, if you had two guys, one that was a "Dave" and one that was a "Sam", you'd be able to put something out there that will probably never be seen for real.

Im actually in the process of forming one in the Louisville KY/Southern Indiana area right now. We have had 2 practices thus far but cant seem to find an acceptable drummer or one that wants to focus just on Van Halen so I have placed ads on local websites and MySpace. We are going to do strictly Dave Era because it seems that is what the mainstream people associate with VH. We will probably end up having a 25 song set list. I have mentioned doing some Sammy era but the guitarist and bassist I have are not interested in doing it, we may end up doing a few songs from time to time from Van Hagar but not immediately. Just my two cents worth.

    Default The Look.

50% of any tribute band has the sound. 5% has the look. Why is it when you go see a tribute band, all they look like is themselves. C'mon. You're in a tribute band!! Rock out with some wigs ......okay...for instance......if I'm going to see a VH tribute band, the drummer should not have a beard. The Bass player should because of Mike Anthony. Or seeing any other bands of any kind whether it's a Quiet Riot one or whatever. The more you look like the part or the character, the more fun it is to watch and plus, the venues will want you back more often than the little garage band that is right next door. It shows "professionalism" if you got the pedal to the metal..do it all the way. Plus,....if I'm going to see a VanHalen tribute band,...the drummer better have 2 oversised bass drums. Wearing aviators. And playing hard and heavy. Cracking cymbals.
The "music" is always there. Spice it up with "The Look".
Go see SabBra Cadabbra (Black Sabbath) tribute. They all look like classic Sabbath and SOUND like em'. The best one by far right up there with Atomic Punks.

I think you could hit all era's and do it well. I think Dave's solo suff (warner brothers era) and Sammy's Geffen era would work well.

I don't know anything about being in a band much less a tribute band but I could imagine having two singers would eat away at profits, though I agree that would be cool. Of course whoever is the second guy to go on would probably be hammered and already have 5 college girls in the bus or cargo van when it was his time to go on.

I bet there are very few people that could pull off both era's with one singer because if he can sing Sam he would have to have a very powerful voice and I doubt he would want to split time and profits. If you have a strong Dave he has got to be a great showman (with ego and possible LSD) and I doubt he would want to share his cash and time.

I do agree it would be cool to see a strong tribute band that can cover both versions. If you want to cover III just throw in "How Many Say I" and let the 'Eddie' sing it because I don't think you can screw up those vocals.

BTW are there any Hagar solo/Wabo tribute bands?

I think a successful tribute band has to look and sound as much as possible like the act they're covering. Dave and Sam have such different looks, on stage personas, and voices, that I can't see one guy pulling off both. If they don't want to share money with two different singers, I guess you're left with what your left with--one era only tribute
    bands.

Still, it would be cool to see a band try it with two guys and have "Dave" and "Sam" on stage together.

Depending if I had a keyboard player or not, I'd pick a lot of the rockers from the Roth and Hagar years. I probably wouldn't choose a song from VHIII but if I did, it would be 'Without You'.
